MARINE DECK OFFICER & CREW #Mates #Captain #ChiefMate #Deckhand All hands on deck! As a Marine Deck Officer or Crew Member in offshore drilling, you may be required to help with activities such as rigging and storing cargo handling gear. For the most part, your job is focused on the navigation, safety and regulatory compliance of the marine vessel. Does nautical life call to you? Then get onboard!
What does this career look like? If there’s a drilling job to be done offshore, it has to be supported by marine infrastructure and expertise, and that’s where you come in. There are a good deal of processes and procedures aboard the vessel (think chain of command), but you find the job is anything but dull. Marine Deck Officers include: Masters or Captains who guide, pilot, maintain and navigate the vessel. Chief Mates or First Mates who supervise the Deck Crew and oversee mooring, ballast control, loading and unloading, as well as night watch activities. Second Mates who maintain watch of the vessel’s control systems. Third Mates maintain watch and ensure the safety of the vessel and crew. Marine Deck Crew are non-certified crew members and conduct activities such as bridge helmsmen and lookout, general cleaning and maintenance duties,and maintenance and operation of safety equipment. A Marine Deck Crew includes Boatswains and Deckhands. You have an understanding of the risks and you know how to manage them.

What would I do? Having been trained in firefighting and emergency evacuation, you know how to operate safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, lifeboats and emergency shutdown systems. You know how to inspect structures, doors and hallways to ensure compliance in areas like watertight integrity. You enjoy being on the bridge of the ship handling radar and navigation systems to ensure collision avoidance. Specifically your job involves:

HOW DO I GET HERE? Marine Deck Officer A high school diploma (or equivalent) and the completion of a Deck Officer Cadet program or at least two years of experience as a member of a deck crew is typically required. Marine Deck Crew A high school diploma (or equivalent) is required. Senior positions in the crew, such as able seaman, require experience. Certification Certifications are also required from Transport Canada.
