Mark 5

At the end of Mark 4 Jesus miraculously transformed a storm at sea into a sea of glass. The point is that as God, He is Lord over Nature. Sorry, there is no mother nature. Now in Mark 5 Jesus meets three people, each with their own specific story of huge personal tragedy being transformed by their faith encounter with Him. In Mark 5: 1-20 Jesus delivers a demonpossessed man as Lord over the Supernatural. In Mark 5:21-34 Jesus restores total health to a dying woman as Lord over Disease. In Mark 5:35-43 Jesus brings a dead twelve-year-old girl back to life as Lord even over Death itself. And the truth is, Jesus wants to take do His work of transformation in us also. Indeed, the more our faith in Him grows the more our lives will be transformed by Him in ways that are absolutely mind blowing. But here’s the question: What does a life transformed by Jesus look like? That’s what we’ll see in our study today.

For Thought & Talk In your small group take 5-10 minutes to review the main points of PJ’s message. Discuss the following questions, taking your time as the Spirit leads, realizing you don’t have to cover them all.

1. Mark 5 tells three stories of a life transformed. Which one of the three most spoke to you and why? Using your imagination to enter into the stories, what do you think the main character (other than Jesus) felt in each account? What do you think the emotions of Jesus were like when He saw this completely insane & extremely dangerous demonized man run straight up to Him? When Jairus knelt before Him begging for his daughter’s life? When His eyes first met the eyes of the woman after she had just been healed? When He held the hand of a dead child and felt the life flow into her again?

Enter Jesus:

The Problem:

A Desperate Father & A Dead Daughter

(Mark 5:21-34)

2. Describe the feelings of hopelessness and helplessness that each of these three scenes describe. As you look at the people whose lives were transformed by Jesus, what lessons can you draw and apply to your own life about how faith in Christ helps us combat such feelings when they grip us? 3. Look again at the threefold description of a transformed life that summarized this message. Why is it important that this kind of transformation take deeper root in yourself? What can you do to cooperate with Jesus in this process?
