C O L G A T E Dear Fans of Colgate Football, Thank you for your interest in supporting the Maroon Council and the Colgate University football program during our 125th season. The Maroon Council is an integral part of Colgate football’s continuing tradition of producing excellence on the field, in the classroom, in the community, and after graduation — the pillars upon which this program has been built. To do all this while competing at the Division I level is what aspirations are all about, and the men attracted to this challenge are special. Please accept this brochure as a personal invitation for you to join the Maroon Council. The contributions toward this group allow Colgate football to reach for excellence. Scholarship recruiting is exciting, but also expensive. Without the support of this fine group, we would not be able to attract the outstanding student-athletes who have come to Colgate. Your donations also enhance the experiences of the athletes who are on the team and ensure all Colgate football players get the first-class experience that only Colgate can give them. I hope that you consider a membership in the Maroon Council today. Joining the Maroon Council and supporting Colgate football keeps everyone involved in the activities of this great “family.” Thank you for all you do.
Best Regards, Dan Hunt Fred ’50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Football Coach
U N I V E R S I T Y Colgate Football Endowments
“Colgate’s biggest advantage as an institution is that it is a small, liberal arts college with Division I athletics. This is a very unique combination that provides benefits to the school (in terms of exposure) as well as to current students and alumni. Colgate’s strong football tradition is an important part of the school’s history and a great source of pride among alumni. Mark Murphy '77 The Maroon Council has been crucial to the President and Chief Executive Officer success of Colgate football over the years.” Green Bay Packers
While annual gifts to Maroon Council help support the program on a year-to-year basis, the establishment of endowments helps ensure the program is supported on a more permanent basis. Contributions are invested by the University and allow the gifts to continue in perpetuity, helping safeguard Colgate’s tradition of excellence against changing economic climates. The endowments mark a new era in Colgate football and a boost for the university's athletics program which benefits from these multi-million dollar funds.
The Fred `50 & Marilyn Dunlap Endowed Chair for Football Fred Dunlap ’50 led Colgate to 77 victories from 1977 to 1987 and served as Director of Athletics from 1976 to 1992. Daniel Hurwitz ’86 P`17 spearheaded the effort to raise the funds necessary to establish the endowment and further cement the Dunlap name in legacy and history of Colgate football. The annual support provided by the endowment contributes toward operating costs such as compensation, administrative support, recruiting, and travel.
"Colgate football has always been about 'over-reaching', whether in scheduling, playing, or life. It's a state of mind, and it's traditional."
Maroon Council Endowment In 1999, Harry Carpenter ’50 established the Maroon Council fund as a resource to perpetuate support for Colgate football, and many alumni, parents, and friends of Colgate football contribute to the fund.
Coach Fred Dunlap '50
Head Football Coach (1976-1987) Colgate Director of Athletics (1975-1992)
"As someone who is entering his senior year with Colgate football, I have really grown to appreciate all the Maroon Council does for us. We are able to play for a first-class program that treats its players well. The Maroon Mentor program and the Maroon Works program have helped me in ways that will affect the rest of my life. The Maroon Council and all they do makes Colgate a unique and special place." Victor Steffen '16
The fund has grown over the years (over $1 million committed) and has been reinvigorated along with the establishment of the Dunlap coaching chair. This endowment is crucial to ensuring that the legacy of Colgate football will continue to grow and thrive for years to come. The annual support provided by the endowment supplements the football program's annual budget from the university.
Please
consider supporting one of these endowments and ensuring the future legacy of Colgate Football. Legal Notice: Funds contributed to The Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Endowed Chair for Football and/or the Maroon Council Endowment will be used to provide perpetual support for the Colgate football program. Pursuant to New York law, the University will expend so much of the Funds each year as it deems prudent in accordance with Section 553(A) of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law.
