Summer Algebra 2 Course Expectations and Procedures

Mr. A. Gonzalez [email protected]

Welcome Aboard! Before we set sail, review the course policies and procedures that you will need to follow in order to have a successful journey. Please read thoroughly, then sign and return the Contact/Acknowledgement Form. Course Description Building on work with linear, quadratic, and exponential functions, students extend their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, and radical functions. Students work closely with the expressions that define the functions, and continue to expand and hone their abilities to model situations and to solve equations, including solving quadratic equations over the set of complex numbers and solving exponential equations using the properties of logarithms. Chapter 1: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities Chapter 2: Functions, Equations, and Graphs Chapter 3: Solving Inequalities Chapter 4: Quadratic Functions and Equations Chapter 5: Polynomials and Polynomial Functions Chapter 6: Rational Functions and Rational Exponents Chapter 7: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions Chapter 8: Rational Functions Chapter 9: Sequences and Series Chapter 10: Quadratic Relations and Conic Sections

How to achieve “GREAT”ness Grades Your course grade is determined by the average of all grades recorded based on three reporting categories: Tests, Quizzes, and Homework. Test grades account for 55% of the final course grade, Quizzes account for 25% of the final course grade, and Homework accounts for the remaining 20% of the final course grade. A+ = 97 – 100 A = 93 – 96 A- = 90 – 92

Academic Grading Scale (%) B+ = 87 – 89 C+ = 77 – 79 D+ = 67 – 69 B = 83 – 86 C = 73 – 76 D = 63 – 66 B- = 80 – 82 C- = 70 – 72 D- = 60 – 62

F = 0 – 59

Homework is scored on a different scale Homework assignments are based on a 10 point scale varying by performance on the assignments. 10 points 85% – 100% 9 points 80% – 84% 8 points 75% – 79%

7 points 70% – 74% 6 points 60% – 69% 5 points 50% – 59%

4 points 40% – 49% 3 points 30% – 39% 2 points 20% – 29%

1 point 10% – 19% 0 points 0% – 9% Late work: No penalty

Resources Math XL will be the online program utilized for all assignments and assessments this summer course except for the final exam (final exam must be completed in person). Math XL provides immediate feedback and has interactive examples for extra guidance. The website for the program is www.mathxlforschool.com. Expectations The summer program is different than traditional schooling. The blended learning style allows for students to accelerate through sections mastered or dissect sections of more difficulty while individualizing the course to their scheduling needs. The student, however, will be required a certain level of independence and selfmotivation since the course is essentially self-paced within certain parameters. Recommended timeline: 7 weeks (June 13 – July 29) Week 1: Chapters 1 and 2 Week 3: Chapters 5 and 6 Week 5: Chapters 9 and 10 Week 2: Chapters 3 and 4 Week 4: Chapters 7 and 8 Week 6: Chapters 11 and 12 Week 7: Final Exam (in person) Students may elect to split final exam in two parts or take one cumulative exam at the end. Chapters 1-6 Exam taken in week 4, then chapters 7-12 taken in week 7. Dates and schedules can vary although final deadline for all assignments and assessments to be completed is Friday, August 5th Assistance Students can email or see me with any specific curriculum questions or concerns. All emails will be answered within 48 hours. I will be available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. in room HS211 at the high school campus at WCS. However, please make an appointment ahead of time to ensure I am available and you can receive individualized attention.
