Grow Your Skills! A volunteer program for residents of

VOLUNTEERS The Master Gardener Volunteer program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county Cooperative Extension office to expand educational outreach throughout the community by providing home gardeners with research-based information.

Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County Master Gardener Volunteer Program Who Are the Master Gardener Volunteers? The Master Gardener Volunteers are a group of Sullivan County resident volunteers trained by Cornell University Cooperative Extension to meet goals aligned with Cooperative Extension’s educational mission. Master Gardener Volunteers carry out community outreach in horticulture and gardening that extends research-based education to the community.

Subjects Included in the Training Program:       

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals with a basic knowledge and interest in landscape and food gardening. Candidates should have an interest in teaching others and a flexible schedule compatible with our program activities.

Garden Botany and Vegetable Gardening Culture and Maintenance of Herbaceous and Woody Plants Native and Invasive Plants and Weeds Plant Pathology, Entomology , and Pest Management Pruning and Lawn Care and Design Soils, Fertilizers, Composting and Organic Gardening Management of Nuisance Wildlife and much more!

“Cornell University Master Gardener Volunteer” is a designation that expires when the volunteer relationship with Cornell University Cooperative Extension ends. Master Gardeners in good standing may be reappointed every two years and the vast majority of Master Gardener Trainees remain active in our program for many years. Volunteers attend an intensive 60 hour training course over a 15 week period followed by an 80 hour volunteer commitment over the next two years. This training is not a certificate program. As you will discover, there is a wide range of activities available to Master Gardener Volunteers to combine skills and interests with the educational needs of Cornell University Cooperative Extension Sullivan County.

How Do Master Gardeners Volunteer? Master Gardener Volunteers...        

Give lectures to garden clubs and community groups through a Speakers' Bureau. Organize an annual Plant Sale and organize garden tours. Design and maintain demonstration gardens for the benefit of the public. Restore historic gardens. Staff “Ask the Master Gardener” booths at farmer’s markets and community events. Write gardening Q&A articles for publication in local newspapers and CCE newsletters. Act as mentors and give technical guidance to school and community gardening projects. Address home gardening inquiries through Master Gardener Volunteer “hotline” via phone and e-mail.

What You Need to Know :    

 



You must complete an application and furnish two personal references, who are not relatives , with your application. Personal interviews will be conducted from a pool of qualified applicants. Applicants are chosen according to skills that align with the current needs of the organization. Successful Master Gardener Volunteer applicants must agree to undergo a criminal background and driver’s license check. Your social security number will be required for this process. Your information will be held in strictest confidence. Although the bulk of the training costs are substantially subsidized by CCE, trainees pay nominal fees in 2016 for a manual, materials and refreshments. Scholarships are available. Master Gardener Volunteer trainings include weekly lectures, homework assignments, quizzes, a take-home final exam, and presentations developed individually or by group to be delivered to the public. Following completion of training, Master Gardener Volunteer Interns must volunteer 80 hours over a two-year period to be reappointed as Master Gardener Volunteers.
