MASTERING THINKING SKILLS THROUGH INDUCTIVE & DEDUCTIVE REASONING Using Inductive and Deductive Reasoning to fast track thinking for Business Improvement DURATION: 2 DAYS; TIME SCHEDULE Time - 9:00am to 5:00pm Break - 10:15am to 10.30am and 3:15pm to 3:30pm Lunch - 1:00pm to 2:00pm INTRODUCTION Today we are beyond the Learning Organization. Learning deals primarily with existing knowledge. “What got you here will not get you there”. A “New Think” is required for A “New Thing”. Knowledge and Strategies that worked in the past may not apply today. The rules have changed and this requires us to have fresh perspectives, challenge assumptions and make new sense of reality, be able to see, interpret emerging patterns through a combination of divergent, convergent and critical thinking. Through these we can synthesize solutions to meet increasing demands in problem solving, decision making, process improvement, strategy development and innovation- anchoring on a combination of Inductive and Deductive Thinking. The majority of us actually apply divergent, convergent, inductive and deductive thinking unconsciously. Day to day we generalize, make inferences, test hypothesis, make deductions and come to conclusions mostly through unconscious assumptions. We do this out of habit (unconsciously). What unconsciously do we cannot manage? Therefore conscious awareness of how to think inductively and deductively by design (purposeful thinking) instead of by default is essential to gain new insights into situations and challenges for improved responses. This program provides the perspectives, principles, tools and techniques to do this by design focusing on Inductive and Deductive Thinking. Inductive reasoning is a thinking pattern going from specific facts to general principles, as opposed to deductive reasoning which goes from the general to the specific. It is open-ended and exploratory, especially at the beginning. It is also called the scientific method - observation of cause and effect is the authority. It is more facilitative in nature. In management facilitation skills and coaching utilize predominantly Inductive thinking whereas teaching uses mainly deductive thinking. In contrast, deductive reasoning typically moves from established principles s to specific conclusions Deductive reasoning is narrow in nature and is concerned with testing or confirming a hypothesis. Deductive reasoning leads to a confirmation of our original theories or principles. It guarantees the correctness of a conclusion. Logic is the authority in the deductive method whereas seeing patterns and occurrences is the main thrust in inductive thinking.
