Math 6B Course Overview Mathematics is the study of patterns. Since patterns exist everywhere in the world, mathematics is an invaluable source of tools which can help in understanding the world around you. In this course, you will learn about many mathematical processes which are used commonly in your life: percentages are seen commonly in stores in the form of savings, probability is used often in the news, and geometry can be used to describe the shape of almost any object you might have lying around your home. Knowing more about these mathematical operations and objects will make you better prepared to deal with the problem solving challenges you face every day.
Course Goals By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following:
Describe how ratios are related to percentages Explain how to calculate a percentage of any number Use probability to determine the chances of simple events Describe how common units of measure can be converted into each other Determine the area and perimeter of many types of shapes, such as circles, triangles, and rectangles. Determine the surface area and volume of 3D objects
General Skills To participate in this course, you should be able to do the following:
Complete basic operations with word processing software, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Perform online research using various search engines. Use a calculator.
For a complete list of general skills that are required for participation in online courses, refer to the Prerequisites section of the Plato Student Orientation document, found at the beginning of this course.
Credit Value Math 6B is a 0.5-credit course. Math 6A (or equivalent) should be completed before Math 6B.
