2010 NAIA Football Championship Series -- Nov. 27, 2010 Bob Young Field -- Sioux Falls, S.D.

Sioux Falls 27, McKendree 7 (Sioux Falls, S.D.) -- One week after piling up season high numbers in both total offense and rushing yards, McKendree was held in check by the defending NAIA national champions at Sioux Falls. McKendree picked up just 100 yards of total offense on the day, including 36 yards on the ground. Sioux Falls used a balanced attack to register nearly 400 yards on the day against the Bearcats. The loss ended McKendree’s year at 9-3. Sioux Falls broke through with a touchdown late in the first quarter, then added 10 more points in the second quarter to take a 17-0 lead at the half. The Cougars extended their advantage to 20-0 before McKendree scored its only points of the contest. Emmitt Harriel intercepted a Sioux Falls pass deep in Cougar territory and returned it to the three-yard line. Two plays later, Larry Russell scored on a one-yard run, and Jordan Fark’s extra point brought the Bearcats within 20-7. However, Sioux Falls sealed the win with a touchdown in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Myron Hicks, who had two catches against Sioux Falls, tied the Bearcats’ single-season record for receptions. He finished the year with 30 catches, matching the mark set by Byron Gettis in 2009. Gettis closed out his McKendree career with a record 70 receptions. Teams McKendree Sioux Falls

Head Coach Carl Poelker -- 16th Season • 112-46 Record at McKendree • 9 NAIA Championship Series Appearances • 7 MSFA Midwest League Titles • 2 MSFA Coach of the Year Awards • 1 NAIA Coach of the Year (2002)

Carl Poelker is in his 16th season as the head football coach at McKendree University. During his tenure at McKendree, Poelker led the Bearcats to a 112-46 overall record and nine NAIA playoff appearances in a span of 14 years. That last number included a run of five consecutive trips to the NAIA post-season from 2001-05. Poelker became the eighth football coach in NAIA history to reach the 200-win mark for a career when McKendree defeated McPherson College in the first round of the 2010 NAIA Football Championship Series, 38-14. Under Poelker’s leadership McKendree won seven MSFA Midwest League championships. The Bearcats shared the title in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2010, and posted an undefeated record in league play on their way to outright MSFA Midwest crowns in 2004 and 2009. For his efforts on the field, Poelker earned MSFA Midwest Coach of the Year honors following the 1999 and 2002 seasons. Since 1996, 14 players that have worn the Purple and Gold earned first- or second-team NAIA All-America honors during their careers. Sixty-nine different Bearcat players earned first-team AllConference accolades in that span. While the McKendree football program has given its followers plenty of memorable moments, the 2002 season may stand out as the most memorable to date. The Bearcats won a school-record 11 games on their way to a berth in the NAIA national semifinals. McKendree led the nation in rushing offense with nearly 4,200 yards on the ground, while three Bearcat players earned NAIA All-America honors. For his part in leading the Bearcats through that memorable season, Poelker was selected as the 2002 NAIA Football Coach of the Year. While the numbers on the field certainly stand out, the figures posted by the Bearcat players away from the gridiron are the ones that matter most to Poelker and his staff. The McKendree football program produced 25 different NAIA Scholar-Athletes, including a program-record seven in 2008. McKendree has had 72 Academic All-Conference honorees. The program also produced the first College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) Academic All-American in McKendree University history when Allen Walter received the honor in 2000. Under Poelker’s leadership, the McKendree football team has a 99 percent graduation rate. Poelker was named as the 16th head football coach in McKendree history after nearly three decades of coaching at his alma mater, Millikin University. He served as an assistant coach for the Big Blue before being named head coach in 1982. Poelker and his wife, Peggy, reside in Breese. They have five children: Tim, Todd, Traci, Trent and Ty; and 18 grandchildren. Trent Poelker is the defensive coordinator for the McKendree football program and also serves as the McKendree golf director.
