Customer Success Story: McKeon Group | September 2014

BUSINESS Construction, telecommunications, electrical and mechanical services across Ireland Headquartered in Dublin, McKeon Group offers multi-disciplinary construction services throughout Ireland. Its circa 50 employees and team of subcontractors provide comprehensive services extending from construction to mechanical, electrical and telecommunications services. The company specialises in medium to large-scale refurbishment and new works projects, ensuring that every project is completed to the same high standards for quality, health and safety and environmental impact. McKeon Group is looking to expand over the next three years, while maintaining its reputation for professionalism, value for money and dedication to its clients.

CHALLENGE Safeguarding staff access to construction job details From job quotations and vendor contacts to email and accounting systems, McKeon Group’s employees need fast and reliable access to company data. The majority of this critical information is stored on servers at McKeon Group’s head office and accessed from remote sites as required. To prevent business disruption, this data must be protected against incidents such as server room floods, server failure or accidental deletion. As Tomás Mac Eoin, Director at McKeon Group clarifies, “Any limitations on accessing data would essentially prevent us from operating: we need to have job details to hand in our offices and on sites across Ireland. If there was a disaster impacting our server room, we could lose time, money and potentially our clients.”

The construction group was relying on daily tape backups that were then stored offsite, but this system had it drawbacks. “Not only were we at risk from tapes or tape drives failing and losing data, but the system relied on someone manually running the backup and taking tapes offsite every day,” Mac Eoin explains. McKeon Group recognised it needed a more reliable system that could cope with its array of bespoke software while simplifying management and minimising the risk of human error. When the licence for its existing backup solution expired, it took the opportunity to explore the options available on the market.

SOLUTION Virtualised and automated backup In January 2014, McKeon Group implemented the arcserve Unified Data Protection Suite. “The arcserve solutions were recommended by a number of sources and ticked all the boxes when it came to the functionality we needed,” comments Mac Eoin. The data protected includes all critical business information such as accounting data, CAD drawings, photographs taken on site and the quality management systems that enable it to maintain ISO 9001 certification. The arcserve solution backs up all data centrally from McKeon Group’s main server room. Mac Eoin explains, “Incremental backups run nightly, with data exported to a storage server and then replicated to an offsite virtualised disaster recovery server.” If a file is accidentally deleted, the IT team can recover it in a matter of minutes via the arcserve interface. The solution enables granular restores from Microsoft Exchange, enabling deleted messages to be restored directly to the individual’s mailbox.

BENEFIT Easier management and rapid recovery With the entire process automated, McKeon Group’s IT team no longer has to concern itself with managing tape libraries and can rest assured that in the event of an IT incident, disruption to its business would be minimal. “We can recover individual files in minutes and even if an entire server goes down we can get it up and running again in a couple of hours,” says Mac Eoin. Using the arcserve Unified Data Protection Suite enables McKeon Group to: •

Simplify IT management

Safeguard business continuity

Prevent disruption to construction projects

“The solution is perfectly suited to us – it provides enterprise-standard capabilities but is affordable to us as a medium-sized company, which means we can focus on our core construction activities.”
