Living Large in Less Than 700 Square Feet Cramming your possessions into a few hundred square feet has its perks. Good thing, because small spaces are no longer just the digs of college dorm dwellers and 20-somethings — some of the most coveted and sophisticated residences in Salt Lake are fewer than 700 square feet. The Kitchen There’s nothing like the absence of shelf space to put a stop to avalanche accessorizing. If it weren’t for my midcollege move from a 4-bedroom house in Sugar House to a 350-square-foot studio downtown, I would still own a gaggle of

clichéd bistro prints, mismatched barstools and roughly 36 decorative mugs lassoed from every Ross clearance rack in town. When your kitchen is half of your house, and your house is no bigger than a twocar garage, you’re forced to discontinue such “possession pushover” tendencies. No garage sale whims, no duplicates, no guilt-imposed gift-keeping and certainly no “likes.” Everything spared, from silverware to Tupperware, is a “love.” The Living Room Where multipurpose rooms are a necessity, so is versatile furniture. The living room, for example, is likely your media room, party room, guest bedroom anAd office. This calls for a closer dissection of every object’s usefulness. Not only are duplicates unflinchingly axed, but any item that doesn’t have at least three uses is also out. Storage ottomans and armchair beds are popular spacesavers, yet should be balanced out with slim furniture so not everything is heavy. For example, a slim parsons table can easily be passed by, anchor a mirror and harbor decorative baskets underneath. Choose interesting practical

pieces, such as pillows and light fixtures, to stand in as the main décor, and hold out for the perfect coffee table: a bench that can also serve as desk, footrest and extra party seating. The Bedroom The bedroom tends to pose the biggest spatial challenge in small living. It requires thinking outside the box and, often, inside a room shaped like Texas or Idaho. The 45-degree angles, diabolically-placed windows and absence of closets can take you from amateur decorator — placing furniture side-byside around the room — to pro: getting down and dirty with your space. To remedy the lack of closet space and bedroom walls, you might use as room dividers a clothing rack, long Hollywood credenza or oversize headboard with hooks on the back. To free up precious floor space you’d surrender with a bed, armchair and bookshelf, owners can carve out a Murphy bed, built-in reading nook and recessed shelving. There was probably a time when you thought you couldn’t live without coat closets, utility closets, shoe closets and walk-in closets, but you quickly adapted to small-space living. When we move into bigger homes, we’ll hang onto that knack for majestically simple décor, cleverly interpreted nooks and a good dejunking.

Finding the Best Apartment for You When searching for an apartment, you may wonder how to find the best fit for you. You want to make sure where you choose to live enhances your life, allows you to sustain yourself financially and is operated by a reputable and customer-oriented company. You should insist on doing a walkthrough of the premises and completing a move-in/move-out inspection sheet. This assures you understand what you are getting, gives the manager a chance to correct any deficiencies and assures you will only be charged, at move out, for damages that occurred while you were there. 3 – Customer Service. Much of your happiness will depend on the customer service of the staff and maintenance team. Walk around the property. A well-maintained, well-groomed property is more likely to have good staff that cares about customer service. Talk to neighbors you see walking around the community. Ask them about their experience living there. Doing these three things will help you make better choices and have a better experience renting. Living Large in Less Than 700 Square Feet Cramming your possessions into a few hundred square feet has its perks. Good thing, because small spaces are no longer just the digs of college dorm dwellers and 20-somethings — some of the most coveted and sophisticated residences in Salt Lake are fewer than 700 square feet. The Kitchen There’s nothing like the absence of shelf space to put a stop to avalanche accessorizing. If it weren’t for my midcollege move from a 4-bedroom house in Sugar House to a 350-square-foot studio downtown, I would still own a gaggle of

clichéd bistro prints, mismatched barstools and roughly 36 decorative mugs lassoed from every Ross clearance rack in town. When your kitchen is half of your house, and your house is no bigger than a twocar garage, you’re forced to discontinue such “possession pushover” tendencies. No garage sale whims, no duplicates, no guilt-imposed gift-keeping and certainly no “likes.” Everything spared, from silverware to Tupperware, is a “love.” The Living Room Where multipurpose rooms are a necessity, so is versatile furniture. The living room, for example, is likely your media room, party room, guest bedroom anAd office. This calls for a closer dissection of every object’s usefulness. Not only are duplicates unflinchingly axed, but any item that doesn’t have at least three uses is also out. Storage ottomans and armchair beds are popular spacesavers, yet should be balanced out with slim furniture so not everything is heavy. For example, a slim parsons table can easily be passed by, anchor a mirror and harbor decorative baskets underneath. Choose interesting practical

pieces, such as pillows and light fixtures, to stand in as the main décor, and hold out for the perfect coffee table: a bench that can also serve as desk, footrest and extra party seating. The Bedroom The bedroom tends to pose the biggest spatial challenge in small living. It requires thinking outside the box and, often, inside a room shaped like Texas or Idaho. The 45-degree angles, diabolically-placed windows and absence of closets can take you from amateur decorator — placing furniture side-byside around the room — to pro: getting down and dirty with your space. To remedy the lack of closet space and bedroom walls, you might use as room dividers a clothing rack, long Hollywood credenza or oversize headboard with hooks on the back. To free up precious floor space you’d surrender with a bed, armchair and bookshelf, owners can carve out a Murphy bed, built-in reading nook and recessed shelving. There was probably a time when you thought you couldn’t live without coat closets, utility closets, shoe closets and walk-in closets, but you quickly adapted to small-space living. When we move into bigger homes, we’ll hang onto that knack for majestically simple décor, cleverly interpreted nooks and a good dejunking.

Finding the Best Apartment for You When searching for an apartment, you may wonder how to find the best fit for you. You want to make sure where you choose to live enhances your life, allows you to sustain yourself financially and is operated by a reputable and customer-oriented company. Much of your happiness will depend on the customer service of the staff and maintenance team. Walk around the property. A well-maintained, well-groomed property is more likely to have good staff that cares about customer service. Talk to neighbors you see walking around the community. Ask them about their experience living there. Doing these three things will help you make better choices and have a better experience renting.
