Measuring Angles in Standard Position Circles are useful because they allow us to look at angles that are larger than . In order to identify angles on a circle, mathematicians came up with a convention for drawing angles. Angles in standard position have one side resting on the positive side of the x-axis. That side is called the initial side. The other side of the angle is called the terminal side. To find the measure of an angle, we start at the initial side, then rotate counterclockwise until we reach the terminal side. Unless otherwise noted, you can assume that angles we are discussing are in standard position.
