2007-08 Women’s Basketball Stony Brook Women’s Basketball 2007-08 Season Outlook The Stony Brook women’s basketball program graduated arguably its best class ever last spring, ending a two-year span in which the Seawolves went 38-23 overall and 26-6 in America East Conference play, finishing second both seasons. Mykeema Ford, the second-leading scorer in program history, was named America East Conference Player of the Year last season and was a three-time All-America East selection. Jessica Smith, the third-leading scorer in Stony Brook history and a three-time All-America East forward; Leah Getz, a third-team All-America East selection last season, and long-range shooter Kelly Watson also are gone. So first-time head coach Michele Cherry, who takes over for her mentor, Maura McHugh, will begin her career with a very young team. “Obviously, we lost a huge part of our production from a season ago, but I’m excited about the team we have this year,” Cherry said. “We have added

raro (Middlesex, N.J.), Cheri Davis (Islip Terrace,

Cheri Davis ‘08 N.Y.), Morgan Patrick (Burlington, N.J.) and Aly Young (Lodi, Calif.) to provide leadership for a team consisting of 10 freshmen and sophomores. “Considering that we have introduced 12 new players to the program over the past two years, the leadership we get from our seniors will b e imperative to our success,” Cherry said. After consecutive third-team All-America East Conference selections as a sophomore and junior, Ferraro, named to the 2007-08 Preseason All-Conference team, heads the senior class. She is the fifth-leading rebounder in Stony Brook women’s basketball history with 776 and is tied

Dana Ferraro ‘08 a talented group of newcomers to the mix who have all experienced success. Since I first arrived at Stony Brook three years ago, our goal has been to win an America East championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament, and this year our goal will be no different.” In the offseason, Cherry hired Greg Adams, who has an extensive coaching background at the collegiate and high school levels. Former Seawolf Jessie Boylan, a two-time captain and four-year letter-winner, also joins Cherry’s staff, and Olivia Dardy, who was part of the program last season, completes the coaching staff. “I am very fortunate to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable staff,” Cherry said. “I have known Greg for many years and he brings us a lot of experience not only with X’s and O’s but in recruiting and player development. Jessie was always a coach on the floor as a player at Stony Brook. She’s a coach’s kid with knowledge beyond her years. Olivia served as our recruiting coordinator last season and will continue with that role this year. She is a very good recruiter and does a great job on the court as well.” The Seawolves will look to seniors Dana Fer-

Morgan Patrick ‘08 for seventh with 59 career blocks. The 6-1 Ferraro averaged 7.2 points per game last season and led the America East in rebounding for the second straight season with 7.7 rebounds per game. She scored in double figures nine times, including a career-high 19 against Hofstra. Fer-

Aly Young ‘08 but she has come back healthy and stronger than ever,” Cherry said. “She is a tireless worker and is very much an energy player. She’s best known for her rebounding prowess and for making hustle plays. I expect to see Dana continue to dominate the boards and grab loose balls, as she has in the past, but we are also counting on her to become more of a scoring threat.” Davis had her best season in a Seawolves uniform in 2006-07. As a junior, she played in all 28 games and recorded career highs in field goals (19), rebounds (54) and points per game (2.5). The 5-9 Davis also shot 30-for-41 from the free-throw line, including a 6-for-6 game in a 7169 win over Yale. She recorded game-highs in minutes (33), rebounds (10) and assists (three) against Vermont and points (12) against Yale. “Cheri is one of the best pure athletes in the America East Conference,’’ Cherry said. “She’s worked on becoming a scoring threat from the perimeter, but her bread-and-butter is slashing and getting to the basket.” Patrick will be counted on to provide senior leadership and to serve as a presence in the paint. The 6-2 Patrick contributed key minutes off the bench for the Seawolves last season and will compete for a starting slot. She played a career-high 16 minutes against George Washington last season. “Morgan has battled injuries throughout her career but has come back this season healthy and in great shape,” Cherry said. “She gives us a very strong, physical presence in the low post. We are counting on her to provide scoring and defense on the block.” Young, a 6-0 forward and the fourth member of the senior class, started 16 games last season before suffering an injury. She shot 75 percent from the free-throw line and scored in 14 of 16 games. Young also will be counted on to lead the team on the defensive end. She recorded 23 steals in 16 games, including five-steal games

2007-08 Women’s Basketball Stony Brook Women’s Basketball 2007-08 Season Outlook against George Washington and Central Connecticut State. “It is very comforting for me to know Aly will be back on the court this season. She is versatile and can play multiple positions. She is very skilled and has a high basketball I.Q.,” Cherry said. “She can provide a scoring threat from both the perimeter and the paint, she can handle the ball well and she is an excellent passer with good court vision. We are counting on her to do a little bit of everything at both ends of the court.” Junior college transfer Kim Etol (Las Vegas, Nev.) comes to the Seawolves after garnering NJCAA honorable mention all-america honors last season while at Arizona Western College. A two-time All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference selection, Etol, a 5-8 guard, averaged 17 points per game and shot over 80 percent from the free-throw line. She also led the Matadors in assists, steals, three-point field-goal percentage and minutes played. Etol is expected to add much-needed scoring and could see significant time at both guard spots. “Kim comes to us with a very impressive junior college resume,” Cherry said. “She can handle the ball, shoot the three and get to the basket. She should provide immediate help in the backcourt not only with her ability to score but with her defense.” Cherry also will look to Kairsten Nunn (Bowie, Md.) as a key contributor this season. Nunn, a 5-9 guard, sat out last season after transferring from Coastal Carolina. She will see time at the point and wing positions for the Seawolves. “Kairsten gained valuable experience going against Mykeema Ford every day last season as a practice player while sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules,’’ Cherry said. “She is a very good ballhandler and provides us another outside scoring threat. She is a tough competitor who I expect to give us key minutes.” Milani Malik (Brooklyn, N.Y.), a 5-6 guard who transferred to Stony Brook last season from Nesho Community College in Chanute, Kansas, adds depth to the guard position. “Milani is a hard worker who has improved many aspects of her game since last season,” Cherry said. “She will challenge for minutes in the backcourt.” As freshmen last season, 5-10 Joia Daniels (Silver Spring, Md.), 6-2 Sarah Kazadi (Bronx, N.Y.) and 6-0 Crystal Rushin (Valley Stream, N.Y.) played limited minutes. As sophomores, they will challenge for significant playing time. According to Cherry, “Joia, Sarah and Crystal had a difficult time getting on the court last season due to all the seniors we had. However, this season should be much different. They all returned in great shape and have improved nearly every aspect of their games.” Cherry added, “Joia will give us minutes at forward. She has very good instincts and she has worked very hard to extend her shooting range beyond the arc. That, along with her toughness, strength and athleticism, will make her a tough matchup. “Sarah has probably improved more than anyone on our team over the past year. She has worked very hard to develop a more consistent low-post game and to improve her shot from the

high post. She is a great athlete and hard worker who should battle for key minutes. “Crystal has all the tools. She can play small or power forward. She can shoot the three, can go off the dribble and can post up. She presents some interesting matchup possibilities for us. I expect big things from her this season.” Cherry has brought in a heralded and talented freshman class of five that is expected to provide additional depth. Ariel Brown (Lumberton, N.J.) is a 5-8 shooting guard. As a senior at Rancocas Valley High School, Brown was named All-Burlington County by the Philadelphia Inquirer and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee. “Ariel has tremendous upside. She can shoot off the catch or off the dribble and can defend on the ball as well as anyone,’’ Cherry said. “She gives us added depth in the backcourt and should compete for playing time early in her career. Her future is very bright.” Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) is a 5-5 point guard who could help fill the void left by Ford. Horsey averaged seven assists as a senior while leading Cheltenham High School to a Pennsylvania 5A state championship in 200607. She also is the school’s all-time assist leader. An honorable mention all-state selection as a senior, Horsey was rated by the All-Star Girls Report as one of the top 300 high school players in the country last season. “Misha is a true point guard,’’ Cherry said. “She’s an excellent ballhandler and passer and can shoot behind the arc. She’s adept at running a team and I expect that we’ll see a lot of her on the court this season.” Long Island native Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) will be counted on to give Stony Brook a force up front. Jeter averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as an Elmont senior and was considered one of the top players on Long Island. “Kirsten is one of those players who steps on the court and then just flat-out goes to work. She plays all-out all the time,’’ Cherry said. “She is tough going to the basket and is a strong finisher. She gives us depth and toughness at both forward spots.” Samantha Norwood is a 6-1 post player (Perth, Western Australia). Norwood played her high school ball at Willeton Senior High School, considered one of the top high school basketball programs in Australia. Norwood received votes as one of the top players under 21 in all of Australia and Oceania. “Sam is a physical player who picks up on things very quickly,’’ Cherry said. “She is very knowledgeable about the

11

game and is comfortable playing with her back to the basket and facing up. She will add to our depth in the post.” Jodie Plikus (Waterford, Conn.) is a 5-8 shooting guard. During her time at Waterford High School, Plikus was named first team all-state by the Hartford Courant and first team all-area by the New London Day and Norwich Bulletin, and was made a Class L first team all-state selection by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association. “Jodie is a deadly shooter, a great passer and a very heady player,’’ Cherry said. “She picks up on things quickly and has a good feel for the game. She has made a strong case to see action on the court early on in the season.” The 2007-08 schedule includes six games against teams that won more than 20 games and three that won at least 25. “Once again, we have a very competitive and challenging schedule,” Cherry said. “Seven teams on our schedule advanced to postseason play last season and four teams won their conferences. Furthermore, we have a tough stretch of road games at the end of November and into December that will serve as a huge test for our young team. All in all, the schedule of non-conference games we have put together should serve as a catalyst to prepare us for an always-challenging America East schedule.” Stony Brook will open the season at home on November 9 against Iona College. Two days later, the Seawolves hit the road to face the University of Connecticut, which competed in the 2007 NCAA Elite Eight. Stony Brook will follow up with a pair of home contests against Sacred Heart University and Marist College, a 2007 NCAA Sweet Sixteen participant. The Seawolves close out November with games on the road against Manhattan College and Quinnipiac University. December heats up as Stony Brook travels to face Long Island rival Hofstra University on December 4 in a game that will be televised on the Madison Square Garden (MSG) network. Two of the next three opponents are on the road against Ivy League foes Yale University and Dartmouth College, with a home game against Central Connecticut State University in between. After facing Northeastern University in Boston on December 22, Stony Brook travels to Bethlehem, Pa., to participate in the Christmas City Classic hosted by Lehigh University. The Seawolves will face the University of Rhode Island on December 29 and will play either Lehigh or Brown University the following day. This will close out the nonconference portion of the schedule. Stony Brook returns home to open America East Conference play against the University of Vermont on January 5. Other notable home conference dates include a contest against the University of Hartford on January 29 and intrastate matchups against the University of Albany and Binghamton University on February 23 and February 27, respectively. The Seawolves conclude the season at home against the University of New Hampshire on March 8. The 2008 America East Conference Tournament begins on Thursday, March 13, in Hartford, Connecticut.
