Meet Recap LUBBOCK INVITE 2017 CHS Swim Team Faces the Giants Last weekend the CHS boys and girls Varsity Swim Team had the privilege to compete at a two-day tournament in Lubbock against some of the best swimmers in the state of Texas. It was clear the team was no match for power house schools such as Klein and Southlake Carroll, which showed up with a 100+ swimmer team three times the size of ours. Coppell would have to transform into a swim town with a solid feeder program to get to such levels. However, the meet did for our grass-root team what it was intended to do: It provided a perfect check point for our swimmers to see where they are at on their path to District, which is now less than three weeks away. In addition, this three-day travel trip, the team’s first travel meet in years, offered itself for some great team bonding which is invaluable so close to the main meets at the end of the season. Where several swimmers had to pay the price for taking time off during the Christmas Break, most of our Varsity A swimmers delivered: The vast majority produced times in Saturday’s finals that provide ample confidence for producing peak times at District at the of this month and Region a week later. INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS Robyn Li swam her most impressive time of the season in the 50 free as a relay anchor by clocking 26.9” in a textile suit! Aurelie Migault, also in textile, swam her fastest 50 breast split ever in a time of 32.0”. In addition, her 1:09” in the 100 breaststroke was just a few tenths off her best time she set in a tech suit at TISCA earlier this season.
Robyn Li – Fastest Time of the Season Sophie Wilcox is back! Her 1:04 in the 100 fly and 1:05” in the 100 back proof that she will once again be a serious contender at District. Perhaps most impressive was her 58.3” 100 free relay split, which secures her spot on and fills the void in our record breaking 400 freestyle relay. Twin sister, Anna
WiIlcox, underscored her team value and proved she can compete with the best in the state with times of 2:01” in the 200 free and 5:24 in the 500”. Considering the end-of-season taper is still to come, Wilcox will have a serious shot at breaking school records in the events. Equally impressive were her contributions to the freestyle sprint relays where she recorded a time of 56.4” in the 100 free as the relay lead-off and a 25.8” in the 50 free as the 200 free relay anchor. Gabi Badillo’s relay split of 28.6” in the 50 fly was her best this season by far, which should make this relay very competitive at District this year.
Anna Wilcox – CHS’ Leading Freestyler Captain Daniel Chang was again impressive racing to an all time best of 56.4” in the 100 fly in finals, which paves the way to District and Region. His split of 53.6” in the 100 free was also impressive and put him on the radar for the 400 free relay. Noah Nemec put down his mark in the same relay with a split of 53.3”, which provides much hope for the quickly approaching end-of-the-season championships. Freshman Justin Kim is hungry for success and continues to race fearlessly amongst the state’s top breaststroke swimmers. Seemingly unintimidated, he sped to his fastest 50 breaststroke split so far in a time of 29.4”—a time that, at this point in the season, makes breaking the 200 medley relay school record a very realistic goal. Kim also recorded a 1:06” in the 100 breaststroke, which is a luxury freshman time for any high school team. Mohit Rao proved he is one of the best high school backstrokers in the Region recording times of 25.9” and 55.7” in the 50 and 100 backstroke, respectively. His time of 51.6” (50.5” all time best relay split) in the 100 free also provides plenty of confidence going into District. Ivan Lau was just an inch behind with a time of 51.7” in the same event. As a freshman, Lau is invaluable to the team and expected to drive the relays for years to come. Our middle distance squad looked strong with very solid swims by Cole Tramel in the 200 free in 1:54” and 500 free in 5:02”. Ben Borchgardt and Matthew Rodman recorded unexpected times in the 500 free in 5:18” and 5:42”, respectively, which offers great opportunities at District.
Ben Borchgardt – Impressive 500 Freestyle Honorable mention goes to Irene Chang who keeps getting faster in the 100 butterfly, in which she sped to an all time best of 1:15”. Chang moved up to Varsity just over 4 months ago and is now looked at as a possible replacement for our graduating butterfliers. The same can be said for Emil Aaltonen who produced a relay split of 26.2” in the 50 fly. He may well be the leading man in the butterfly events next year. In addition, his freestyle times continue to improve as well making him a logical prospect for permanent spots on the sprint free relays next season.
