Darcie Vincent became the seventh head coach in Appalachian State University history on April 24, 2008 after eight years as the head coach of California (Pa.), where she led the Vulcans to their first-ever NCAA Division II national title in 2004. In her first season at helm, Vincent helped the program earn more overall and more conference wins than the previous season, with the Mountaineers posting a 9-22 record and going 7-13 in SoCon play. Under her guidance, ASU advanced to the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 season. She also coached Sade’ Means and Canesha Edwards to SoCon Coaches all-freshman honors and helped Brittany Mixon pick up SoCon Sports Media Association second-team all-conference honors and earn second team all-tournament recognition. The Mountaineers also defeated SoCon foe Davidson for the first time since 2005-06 and beat Georgia Southern in the squad’s regular-season finale, defeating the Eagles for the first time since 2006-07. In her tenure as a head coach, Vincent’s teams have won 20 or more games eight times. Vincent held a 212-47 record at California University and led the Vulcans to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title four times and posted four second-place finishes in the conference as well. The Fairmont, W. Va. native was named the 2004 PSAC West and WBCA Regional Coach of the Year after leading the team to a 35-1 record and the national title. Her teams posted an 82-14 conference record under her tutelage. She coached at Slippery Rock for four years prior to her tenure at Cal U, and led the team to a PSAC title and the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 2000. Vincent was 52-54 in her four years at Slippery Rock where she took the team to the NCAA Elite Eight in 1999-2000. Her mark of 23-7 that season stands as the most wins in school history. The team’s three NCAA tournament wins came by an average of 15 points. She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Duquesne, then spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Slippery Rock before taking over the head coaching reins for

2004 NCAA National Championship

Darcie Vincent led the 2003-04 California Vulcans to the NCAA Divsion II national championship in her fourth season at helm. Cal posted a 35-1 record and stormed through the postseason with an average margin of victory of more than 18 points per game. Cal had never won an NCAA postseason game prior to Vincent’s arrival.

Vincent on Kearney: “Heather is a great addition to our program, and adding her to the staff elevates us to the championship Associate head coach Heather Kearney joins Appalachian’s staff after a one-year stint as the head coach at California University-Pa. As the head coach for the Vulcans in 2008-09, she lead the squad to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance and a final national ranking No. 4. During the 2008-09 campaign, the Vulcans posted a 29-5 record, including a spotless 17-0 mark on their home court. The team also captured the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West title, won the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournament and Kearney nabbed PSAC West Coach of the Year honors. During her time at Cal U, she helped the Vulcans achieve eight-straight NCAA tournament appearances, seven PSAC West championships, four conference crowns and win the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2004. Kearney played under Vincent at Slippery Rock from 1995-1999. She led The Rock to an NCAA Division II East Regional Championship and was named a Kodak all-American. She was the PSAC West Rookie of the Year in 1996 and finished her career with The Rock as the school’s career-leading scorer and second in career-rebounding. The Harrisville, Pa. native earned an undergraduate degree in sports management from Slippery Rock in 1999 and completed a master’s degree in counseling from the Rock in 2003.

Vincent on Gross: ““Andrea joining our staff was a pleasant surprise. She was a graduate assistant and a part of our national championship team at Cal (Pa.) She has a great mind for the game and is a phenomenal recruiter. She brings great energy and excitement and is another strong addition to the ASU women’s basketball staff.”

Andrea Gross comes to Appalachian with a large amount of coaching experience, most recently serving as an assistant coach at Colgate. She also served coaching stints at Longwood for one season and Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) for two seasons. While at IUPUI, Gross helped the Jaguars have the largest season win turn-around in Division I during the 2006-07 season. Before coaching at IUPUI, Gross was a graduate assistant at California (Pa.) where she served on ASU head coach Darcie Vincent’s staff and helped the Vulcans capture a national championship. A native of Pueblo, Colorado, Gross played at William and Mary from 1998-2002 and was a team captain during her senior year. She was named the Tribe’s defensive player of the year as a freshman and finished her career third in school history with career blocks. Gross earned a bachelor of arts in kinesiology and sociology from William and Mary in 2002 and completed a master’s degree in business administration from California-Pennsylvania in 2004.

Vincent on Mack: “Kiesha is a very mature young woman with a lot of experience and will be an asset to our program. She

Kiesha Mack spent one season at East Stroudsburg University before accepting the assistant coaching position at Appalachian State. Prior to her stint as an assistant at ESU, she was an assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at West Chester Henderson High School. She also coached the West Chester Sparks AAU team and is the founder and director of the Kiesha Mack’s Girls Basketball Camp. Mack played basketball at West Chester University, and was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Rookie of the Year during the 2000-01 season, earned second-team honors as a sophomore campaign and closed out her final two seasons with consecutive PSAC East Player of the Year accolades. She also closed out her career as the school’s all-time leading scorer and all-time career record holder in three pointers. Mack has the top-three single season marks in three pointers in school history as well. She graduated from West Chester in 2005 with a B.S. in Marketing.
