January 4, 2017

Board Members Joe Bellina – President Chris Kubaszak – Vice President Steve Bartels – Treasurer Andy Phillipson – Secretary

Team Representatives St. Joe – Dave Eckrich Adams – Steve Searfoss Riley – Tom Korell Penn - Tom Morland Valpo – Darrin Stutzman LSJ – Rick Wanning Marian – Shelby Cochran

Jim Reits – Commissioner - Absent Dean Ott – Commissioner Tom Seroczynski – Commissioner Guests: Chris Kleva – St. Joe Coach, Adam Fish – Referee in Chief, Ron Duvall Jr.- MHSHL JV Coach Meeting called to order at 7:02pm 1. Secretary Report and Minutes Review Andy Philipson Corrections made to several typos in the original draft. Motion made to accept final December notes. Motions seconded. Meeting notes approved. 2. Treasurer Report - From Steve Bartels Admissions receipts for the season to date are $13,285.00. We are approximately $1700 below our expected/planned gate. We should have gate receipts over the rest of the season to equal or exceed the $1700. Team assessments are paid for all teams with the exception of the Adams/Marian club. Steve asked for clarification on a bill he received for a St. Joe JV game with Valpo. Chris Kleva agreed to check to make sure about who should pay. The game in question was at ND during Valpo’s practice time. Chris wants to make sure if Valpo was billed for ice time or not. The agreement was that one team would pay ice time and the other would pay the officials. Question was asked about the TM budget. (More covered below on TM.) Both teams do have a positive balance at this time. The U16 is holding their balance until Nationals. The U18 team will do final accounting and issue refunds. The total expense for the season was approximately $1,100 for the U16 team and under $900 for the U18 team.

3. VP/Disciplinary Committee Updates Chris Kubaszak No disciplinary actions to report on since the last meeting. Chris Kubaszak did ask all the team representatives and coaches to talk to their players. Now that we are in January, we want all players to be very careful. We don’t want anyone to be forced to miss any city tournament games or the state playoff games. 4. Team Michiana Dean Ott Dean has received some player feedback. The biggest change proposed based on feedback is increasing ice time to twice per week at the beginning of the season. Maybe not as necessary as teams move to tournament play and are coming off four and five game weekends. Players did not like or find much value in the second day of off ice classroom training. For example, the classroom work for the U18 team was more focused on leadership than directly related to hockey. That focus would be nice for a full time team or a college team but the kids are high schoolers and mostly want to play hockey. Dean will talk to coaches about trying to incorporate systems training during one or both of the ice sessions. This of course may lead to an increase in the TM fee next year. TM will act to review expenses and close out the budget. Refunds are expected. U16 is going to nationals and all with the exception of one player have committed to going. Dean expects that one player will end up going as well. The U16 team is looking to start some fund raising to reduce the cost of the trip. (That is primarily travel and hotels for several days.) They have a Go-Fund-Me page setup. Dean has put Amie Petrie in charge of this. 5. League Schedule Tom Seroczynski City Tournament Schedule shared with everyone. Verbal review was done during the meeting. The games are played over two weekends staring February 17th. Discussion and agreement reached on how to handle the championship game (This was going pretty fast but I think I have this correct??): 

 

Since last year’s game was a shootout and we have implemented overtime/shootout format for the regular season, we will follow a similar but slightly different format. Bracket games will follow the same overtime/shootout format as the regular season. (I think this is what was agreed to?) Championship game is a single game. The loser bracket team does not need to win twice.

   

The first overtime will be 5-on-5 for a 5-minute period. There will be no scrape after the 3rd period. The overtime will begin quickly – following the normal transition time followed between the 1st and 2nd periods. The first overtime will use long ice for each bench, (i.e., teams will switch ends from the 3rd period). Penalties from the 3rd period of course carry over into the overtime and any future overtime. If the game is still tied, there will be a second 5-minute overtime. No scrape. The second overtime will be 4-on-4. If the game goes to a 3rd overtime, the ice will be scraped prior to the start. The third overtime will continue to be 4-on-4. The time will be set for 10 minutes in the hope the game can be settle through game play. If after that 3rd overtime the game is still tied, we will go to shootout. The shootout will be a 3 man shootout, following the MHSHL rules for regular season shootouts. o Home team chooses where to shoot. o Home team shoots first. o No scrape for the center of the ice. o All players must shoot before repeat shooters. (Need to clarify – all players or all of the three players?) o No players in the penalty box will participate.

MHSHL will try their best to do the awards ceremony quickly prior to the championship game. Joe will work with Tom S. to put the City Tournament format into a bracket style format printed on a larger sheet. It will be posted online and in the Ice Box. Championship is currently scheduled on Rink 2. Tom will check with the Ice Box to get that moved to Rink 1. 

Cross Over Showcase Jim Reits Unfortunately, Jim Reits was not able to make the meeting due to illness. Joe B. did the Crossover Showcase report for Jim. Some comments on the Crossover Showcase are below and a PDF with the survey results is attached. Eight of the sixteen visiting teams responded to the survey (Zionsville had two responses, which is why there are 9 on that attachment instead of 8).   

Positive comments from the visiting teams The vast majority were pleased with the 4 games and early morning and late night schedule was not an issue Unsolicited email from Evansville......shared with Adam -

“This was my 3rd consecutive year at the MHSHL Crossover. Just wanted to say that your group of volunteers did a fantastic job organizing and running the weekend! Very polite and very helpful!” “Another observation that my son & I wanted to make was the officiating of our games and the games we watched was very consistent which is all we can ask. Of course there

are always going to be what we perceive to be missed calls, but the officials did a great job overall. This was our 3rd 4 game weekend this season, and by far, the best officiated compared to our visit to Ft. Wayne & Indy.” “Again, Great Job!” 

    

For the most part the games were kept on schedule, other than Friday night with the last game starting about a 1/2 hour late. The 3-minute warm-ups and starting games earlier than scheduled, when possible, I think helped some. One slightly negative comment was that a few of the officials did not see to be as competent as others. Gail did a great job, food was fantastic Trainers did a great job and were kept fairly busy 6 game misconducts and 1 match penalty over the weekend (none from MHSHL) Final hotel rebate amounts look to be approximately $3690. This is $105 less than what we made last year.

Thanks to all of the volunteers for their help. As far as the survey results attached go, it’s pretty clear that everyone likes that weekend and they want to keep the 4 game schedule even if it means early mornings and late nights. The new rink in Stevensville will be open next year. That rink is about 5 minutes closer to South Bend. No objections received during the meeting to explore using that rink in addition to the Ice Box. Adding another rink could allow for a couple of more team and most importantly eliminate the real early games and real late games. The board agreed to explore using the Stevensville ice if it will help. After some discussion, the primary goal is not to add a lot of additional teams, the real goal is to manage early and late game times. Next year we are looking at the weekend of 12/8 through 12/10. The overwhelming majority of teams think that is a good weekend. 6. ISHSHA Update Colin Reilly Remember the important state dates for everything from rosters (already past) to cross over games, scores sheets. Remind your parents about awards! Not too sure what we will need to do for the state finals. Steve is meeting with Mr. Fleming soon and will learn more. The cancelled December meeting is not rescheduled. Therefore, the next meeting is February 5th. That is the seeding meeting. We can expect that coaches will need to submit their rankings to help with this.

New Business Welcome to MHSHL Skate will happen again this year. Joe is working with Brian T./IYHL to get the list of all bantams that will become freshman. This year we will get the entire list of players – even those that still have 1 year of bantam eligibility. Dave E. suggested we also review last year’s list to insure we invite anyone that dropped out last year. They may have changed their mind and may want to play. Chris K. will share that list for the Welcome Skate invite. Chris Kleva emailed the incoming players last year. Most that were identified did in fact come to MHSHL. He agreed to do the email again this year. (We are trying to get this contact out earlier this year just in case it affects school selection and the decision to play or not.) Dave E. also suggested we change the name of the event so it is clearer what this is for everyone. Ron D. anecdotally reported that we have approximately 39 house bantam players. Not sure what the exact count would be for the two Rovers teams? We are thinking the welcome skate would be on Sunday 3/19 on Rink 2 from 1pm to 2pm. (That date looks to be open on the Ice Box master schedule.) We will confirm with the Ice Box. We will expect 2-3 kids from each team to participate on the ice – this is a rat hockey event. Will also need some adults/coaches on the ice. Each team representative is expected to attend to answer team/club specific questions. Old Business Naming of the 3.0 award and possible 2 tiered award system was discussed again. According to Joe, about 80% of the league is recognized. We previously discussed going to a two-tiered award – one at the 3.0 level and a higher award at something like the 3.5 GPA (on the 4.0 scale). Steve B. made a suggestion: Instead of going to two-tiered 3.0 system, how about keeping the 3.0 award and adding another scholarship in honor of Chris McMillian? Maybe we target the higher GPA’s in the league for senior players going on to college. The structure could be submission of full school transcript for cumulative GPA and course list, SAT/ACT score verification, short coach’s recommendation on the player/players and a short essay done by the player on some topic. (For example, what MHSHL/hockey has meant to their ability to excel in school.) No consensus reached. (NOTE: We do have the funds available to do this.) MHSHL JV has played a few games. There are five dates tentatively scheduled in 2017. Does not look very good that all of the ice times will be needed. Tentatively we have:  

January 29th MHSHL JV vs. St Joe JV at 3:30pm February 5th MHSHL VJ vs. ?? at 10:30am

Ron asked team representative and/or coaches to let him know if they are sending players for these two games. Meeting adjourned at 8:15pm
