My experience revolves around my full-time job as in-house legal counsel and director of corporate compliance for a 360+ employee nonprofit community health center. I touch the areas of risk management, policy & procedures, compliance, and legal matters on a daily basis and have done so for the past five years. I am responsible for all compliance across our organization, to include legal, financial, and medical issues, and developed an entire compliance program from scratch when I came on board. I lead the charge for policies and procedures and am involved in all facets of drafting, editing, publishing, and tracking follow-through by staff. That charge included selecting the software, developing the template for policies and procedures, and training all pertinent employees on the software to ensure that we utilize all the appropriate features and had a robust work plan ready for implementation to all staff. I also organize all outside legal counsel needs, which includes discussions with attorneys, collection of documents, attendance at depositions, and budget review. From a budget standpoint, I’m responsible for approximately $200,000 for the compliance department each year, including review and approval of staffing needs, trainings, and supplies. We track our spending on a monthly basis and I must approve each month what has been spent and track its location within the organization’s larger budget. Beyond that, my role with the International Standards Board (as a representative, legal counsel, and current chairman) gives me the skills to address risk management issues that arise within chapters and report that information to the appropriate individuals at Headquarters. Being the current Chairman allows me to focus on the overall areas of risk management faced by Phi Sigma Sigma as opposed to focusing on the issues seen in one particular chapter. By seeing the big picture, I am able to articulate future priorities for International Standards Board and where our resources need to be directed.
