MEMORANDUM TO:
CHSS Graduate Curriculum Committee
FROM:
Ann Ludwick, PIA Curriculum Coordinator
DATE:
November 15, 2013
SUBJECT:
PIA Curriculum Changes – Biodefense Graduate Program New CERGs
We propose three new graduate certificates: 1. Certificate in Biodefense 2. Certificate in Science, Technology, Security 3. Certificate in Global Health & Security Our rationale: 1. Certificates are significant recruiting tools: a. They are great for students who want to experience the Biodefense program before committing to the entire degree program. Since all of the credits transition seamlessly to the master’s program, they get to try with zero risk. b. They provide a credential for a student who wants to illustrate a particular strength to potential employers. c. They are also of value to students who are seeking additional education but do not need or want a full master’s degree. 2. Certificates leverage existing course schedules and requirements a. We revised the Critical Analysis and Strategic Responses to Terrorism certificate so that its core courses were the same as the Biodefense area of emphasis in Terrorism & Homeland Security. We have done the same with the new certificates, ensuring that we will always be offering the necessary courses on a regular basis and that we do not have to create new courses. 3. Certificates will help attract online students as well as offline students a. We plan to roll out 16 online courses. We will be able to offer the three graduate certificates as well, which should help us ensure success with the online venture.
