Memorial Day Weekend Events throughout Yates County



Penn Yan: On May 30th from 10:00 AM – 12 noon. The parade will begin on East Main Street, proceed down Main Street and stop at the corner of Court Street. The parade grand marshals will be: Phyllis Cramer, WWII Nurse; Martha Rouin WWII W.A.C.; Jean Hoagland, WWII U.S.M.C. The Master of Ceremony is Honorable Judge Pat Falvey; our guest speaker is Dr. Chris Leahy, Keuka College Professor of History, and reading of the Honor Roll is by the VSA director. The public is cordially invited to a luncheon provided by the American Legion immediately following the parade. Bellona. On May 29th at 11:00 AM, the Memorial Presbyterian Church of Bellona, will conduct a Memorial Day service. The honor roll will be read during the service, paying tribute to our veterans who have served our county. The community is encouraged to march up the hill from the church to the Bellona Cemetery led by Penn Yan’s American Legion and VFW Honor Guard. Dresden: On May 30th from 10:30 AM – 12 noon. This is the 94 year anniversary of the parade which will begin at the Dresden United Methodist Church and members of the parade will march to the Evergreen Cemetery, with a concluding memorial service. Dundee’s Memorial Day guest speaker is John Lemke, a Civil War reenactor, who has portrayed President Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address. Dundee: o On May 28th at 11:00 AM. The Dundee VFW – Post 8469, will honor its fallen heroes: Kenneth Kent, Richard Smith and Christopher Scott. Chicken BBQ dinner will be served at 12:30 PM. Please call (607) 243-8669, to make dinner reservations. o On May 30th at 10:00 AM the parade starts at the Dundee Central School and ends at the end of Seneca Street. Gorham/Middlesex/Rushville: On May 30th at 10:00 AM, there is a community parade for the greater Marcus Whitman School District that rotates annually between the Village of Rushville, the Town of Middlesex and the Town of Gorham. This year the parade is in the Town of Gorham, (in the hamlet area on Route 245). The parade begins at 10:00am and it is followed by a veteran’s honor ceremony at the Gorham Fire House. Every year, 3 members of the community are honored, two being veterans and one being a citizen that hasn’t served in the military but has been a dedicated citizen. A program is printed for the parade that has information on the honorees and those participating in the parade. Middlesex. On May 28th at 11 AM, the Vine Valley Community House in Middlesex, will honor veterans during a flag ceremony around the Honor Walk. The Veterans Honor Walk is a commemorative brick path leading to a flag pole, which stands as a tribute to local veterans who served our great nation. Hap Metivier, a WWII Veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, will be the guest speaker for this ceremony and he’ll reflect on active combat service.
