2013-14 MEN’S GOLF PROSPECTUS
After improvement in the fall, Vikings look to build on that for spring season T he Augustana men’s golf team will head into the spring portion of the 2013-14 season with a sense of optimism after coming off a solid fall campaign. The Vikings have a total of seven events under their collective belts from the fall and third year head coach Paul Del Vecchio is looking forward to the spring.
“We played in a lot of events in the fall and that will help us this spring,” said Del Vecchio. “We are looking for consistency each time out.”
“I am excited about the spring season,” said Del Vecchio, who is hoping that his team can improve on a seventh place finish in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in 2013. “We added three freshmen who helped quite a bit in the fall and that has improved our depth quite a bit. The fact that the younger players will have six or seven tournaments heading into the spring will be a plus.” Two freshmen came out of the fall season in the top two spots on the team. Tanner Obal (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) leads the team in low average with a 77.1 mark. He competed in 14 rounds and had a low of 73 with two top five and two top 10 finishes in tournaments. Classmate Michael Jacobs (Freeport Aquin HS, Freeport, Ill.) also played in 14 rounds and sports the fourth-best average on the team at 79.5 with a low round of 71. He also recorded the only par round of the fall season.
Junior Jake Groselak has been named to MVP of the golf team two year in a row. He was second on the Vikings in scoring with an average of 80.4.
Sophomore David Ferlmann (Peoria Notre Dame HS, Dunlap, Ill.) recorded a 78.0 average in 14 rounds with a low of 73 and he had one top-five and two top-10 finishes in the fall. Last year, Ferlmann had an 83.0 average in 20 rounds with a low of 74 and one top-10 finish. He was voted the Vikings’ “Newcomer of the Year”. Junior Jake Groselak (Lemont Township HS, Lemont, Ill.) was the team MVP in 2012-13 with an average of 80.4 in 22 rounds with a low score of 73 and two top-five and two top-10 finishes. This past fall he played 14 rounds and had a 79.2 average with a low of 73. Junior Grant Murphy (Dunlap HS, Peoria, Ill.) played in nine rounds this fall and had an 81.1 average with a low score of 74 and one top-10 finish. As a sophomore he averaged 84.1 in 22 rounds with a low of 73 and one top-five and two top-10 finishes. Junior Max Channon (WheatonWarrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and freshman Eric Swanson (Vernon Hills HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) will also be in the mix for top-five spots on the team. Channon played 10 rounds this fall and averaged 79.7 with a low score of 73 and a top-five and top-10 finish. Swanson also averaged 79.7, in 11 rounds, in the fall and had a low score of 73 with one top-five and one top-10 finish. Freshmen Nicholas Hermanson (Beecher HS, Beecher, Ill.) and Connor Hogan (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) didn’t play in any tournaments in the fall but both have the potential to contribute. Junior Josh Kukla (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) was the Most Improved Player on the team last year and in the fall he played in six rounds with an 82.2 average.
Junior Grant Murphy played well last season, culminating in a 39th place finish in the CCIW Championship.
2013-14 MEN’S GOLF - 3
HEAD COACH PAUL DEL VECCHIO The 2013-14 season marks Paul Del Vecchio’s third season at the helm of the Augustana men’s golf team. Del Vecchio was named the head men’s golf coach at Augustana in August of 2011, replacing Grey Giovanine who stepped aside after 12 years to concentrate full time on his role as head coach of the Viking men’s basketball program. For two seasons (2009-10 and 2010-11), Del Vecchio served as a volunteer assistant under Giovanine. Augustana Director of Athletics Mike Zapolski explained the change and expressed confidence in a smooth transition. “In addition to the on-going recruitment process, men’s golf at the NCAA Division III level has evolved into a significant fall and spring schedule. As a result, we made a strategic decision to make the necessary changes that would create a better situation for everyone involved, particularly our student-athletes. I am thankful for the service that Grey has provided the Augustana men’s golf program the past 12 years and the opportunities that he has provided Paul the last two seasons. It will be a seamless transition, and Paul will be able to devote the necessary energy and time toward our men’s golf student-athletes.” Prior to coming to Augustana, Del Vecchio spent two years as a teaching professional at Cannon Flats Driving Range on the Rock Island Arsenal. He was the head professional at Pinnacle Country Club for seven years after holding similar positions at Fox Run Golf Course in West Branch, Iowa and Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville, Iowa. In addition, he’s held assistant golf pro positions at Short Hills Country Club in East Moline, Illinois and Arthur Pack and Sun City Vistoso Golf Courses in Tucson, Arizona. “I am excited with the challenge,” said Del Vecchio. “I enjoyed working with the studentathletes from Augustana over the past two years and it has been nice to see some of them develop. Recruiting will be the key as we attempt to elevate the program. Del Vecchio, a Davenport, Iowa native, played collegiately at Pima Community College in Tucson. He’s been a Class A member of the PGA since 1995 and competed in two Ben Hogan tour events as a professional. He recorded six top 20 finishes in mini-tour events as well. He played in two PGA events during his career, the 2000 and 2005 John Deere Classic. He currently owns a pair of Anytime Fitness health clubs in the Quad-Cities and resides in Bettendorf, Iowa with his wife Heather and children Andrew, Sophia and Spencer. “I believe in the simple things and working on the short game,” he said when asked about his coaching philosophy. “Everybody likes to hit the ball a long way but it is what you do around the green that can really translate into lowering your score. I am a firm believer in repetition in practice and that is what we will work on.” Zapolski added about the new Viking head man, “Paul has an extensive golf background, and his long-time affiliation with the PGA and many years of teaching experience will be a tremendous asset for our current players while serving as an attractive bonus in the recruiting process. After volunteering his time with us the last two years, Paul is very familiar with Augustana and has an exciting vision on how he wants to build our men’s golf program.”

THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN Now in its 68th year, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” The league was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Competition opened in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois. Carthage left the conference in 1952 but returned in 1961. In 1967 the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin to recognize Carthage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Carthage, Illinois in 1962, and Carroll, which entered the league in 1955. As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW membership has experienced some changes since the league’s inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton left following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and then for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined officially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 year. The last change in CCIW membership came following the 1991-92 season when Carroll withdrew. Now eight members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence. The league sanctioned women’s sports for the first time in the 1986-87 school year and Augustana participated in the first ever women’s competition. That was on September 14, 1986 when the Vikings met North Central in a volleyball match that was held at Elmhurst College. The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin sanctions 21 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball and wrestling.
Augustana also sports varsity men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. Neither women’s nor men’s lacrosse is currently a CCIW sport. Augustana owns more CCIW team championships than any other school in the league with 178 total. Of those 178, the men have won 138 and 40 belong to the women. The CCIW began to award championships in men’s golf since the league’s inception in 1946-47. Since that time the Vikings have won the conference title a total of 16 times.
