M e s s a g e f r o m Fr . To m I'd like to start this letter with a quote from the Book of Common Prayer: The ministry of reconciliation, which has been committed by Christ to his Church, is exercised through the care each Christian has for others, through the common prayer of Christians assembled for public worship, and through the priesthood of Christ and his ministers declaring absolution. The Reconciliation of a Penitent is available for all who desire it. It is not restricted to times of sickness. Confessions may be heard anytime and anywhere. (BCP 446) Lent is the perfect time to at least consider pages 447 - 452 in the Book of Common Prayer: The Reconciliation of a Penitent. Over the next forty days The rite of Reconciliation can teach us how to deal with disruption in our relationships with other human beings as well as with God. An apology is never wasted. Sometimes the simple words “I’m sorry” can be the beginning of a whole new relationship. Setting aside three to five minutes at midday or before retiring to let the events of the day surface in our consciousness helps us figure out what we need to work on. I do my level best to "continue to take personal inventory and when I am wrong promptly admit it." What has been the quality of my relationships and conversations in the past day? How have I furthered life in others, or how have I N S I D E T H I S I been a negative influence? Is God using a predominant emotion to try to make me ISSUE: aware of something in my life that needs attending to? What can I do better the next time I have an exchange with a particular person? Sr. Warden’s Report 2-3 The important thing is fidelity to the discipline; it just may bring a deeper level of consciousness to the hurriedness of our lives. Over time a pattern may emerge that Parish Prayer List 4-5 you may want to reveal to a "confessor"; who, by the way, need not be a priest! The Rubrics on page 446 state that "another Christian may be asked to hear a Saint Joseph 6 confession, but it must be made clear to the penitent that absolution will not be pronounced; instead, a declaration of forgiveness is provided." Calendar 7 During this seasonal time of self-examination it is very "burden lifting" to hear the words: Episcopal Church Women Conference

S e n i o r Wa r d e n ’s R e p o r t Greetings in Christ! “O Lord, hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer. When I call answer me. O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer. Come and listen to me.” Taize song prayer The vestry, with four new members, met on February 2nd for our first meeting together. Dinah Parkison agreed to be a temporary clerk. Thanks be to God! Bonnie Damori volunteered to be the vestry clerk. We greatly appreciate her offer because it is very hard to be both a vestry member listening to discussion and the recording clerk who has to write down information for the minutes. Carol Pierce volunteered to be the Treasurer and the vestry confirmed that appointment. The vestry liaison members for the committees are as follows: Christian Education – Judith Semple Worship/Liturgy/Music – Maggi McCreery-McCoy Finance – Carol Pierce & Dinah Parkison Pastoral Care – Sheryl Matthews (calling committee) & Rollie Parkison (Eucharistic Visitor training) Building and Grounds – Mike McGowan & Bernie Damori Transition – Bernie Damori & Mike McGowan Capital Campaign – Rollie Parkison At the February meeting we developed the following 2013 Strategic Plan using the previous plan as a guide: Three months ~ Complete the next grant request to Episcopal Church Foundation by April 1 Join one or more Chamber of Commerce committees to get more visibility in the Gillette community Host a Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper Plan an Easter potluck Work towards the sale of the Moonshiner property Raise the rest of the money for Phase I of the building project Six months ~ Complete an all member canvass Update our Website Work towards the sale of the Moonshiner property Increase activities for our youth Start having quarterly potlucks to increase fellowship & a sense of community Add $165,000 to our building fund

S e n i o r Wa r d e n ’s R e p o r t C o n t i n u e d Twelve months ~ Start Phase II building Add 5 new families Continue with fundraising activities Complete the sale of the Moonshiner property Increase activities for our youth Five years ~ Start an endowment fund and continue the building fund Day Care Center with before and after school care Investigate the possibility of starting an Adult Day Care program. The vestry has assigned members to certain tasks from the strategic plan to help move us forward. On February 14-16 Bishop John Smylie visited Holy Trinity Episcopal Church to see for himself how we were doing as a “homeless” congregation and to see how the building project was progressing. He felt that our project was moving in the right direction. He recommended appointing a bishop’s liaison from the congregation or vestry to help the Capital Campaign Committee continue to meet goals in the large fund raising campaign. I will be in charge of finding that person. The liaison will report to the bishop, Fr. Tom and the vestry. He also felt that another vestry member should be on the Capital Campaign Committee. We still have the large task before us of raising the money to build God’s church. Through prayer and action I feel we can do it. I do think that each one of us needs to continue committing “time, talent & treasure” to the building project and to Holy Trinity. To those who have already given much, I thank you and encourage your continued help. To those who have not been able to make that commitment yet, I ask you to prayerfully consider doing so now—we need all gifts of time, talent & treasure to build the church. We will be doing an all member canvass asking individuals and families to commit money to the building fund within the next 6 months. We are also considering taking up a second collection each Sunday designated for the building fund. There will be more information forthcoming on that. In closing, we need to look at what has been accomplished at the Tanner property and thank God! We need continued prayers for money, growing our congregation, growing our Sunday School and youth activities. In other words, we need to pray in support of our continued efforts in continuing God’s work and outreach to the Gillette community. Lent has begun—this is a time for renewal, of practicing discipline and of letting the Holy Spirit prepare us for Easter and the Resurrection. Let us continue praying for each other as we continue our journey towards a permanent home. “O Lord, hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer. When I call answer me. O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer. Come and listen to me.” Taize song prayer May God’s peace and grace be with you, Maggi McCreery-McCoy

Saint Joseph ~ 19 March ~ Born: Bethlehem c. 90 BC (according to non-canonical sources) Died: Nazareth, July 20, 18 AD (tradition) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Joseph in the New Testament The epistles of Paul are generally regarded as the oldest extant Christian writings. These mention Jesus' mother (without naming her), but do not refer to his father - other than God (Romans 15:26 etc.). The oldest gospel, that of Mark, also does not mention Jesus's father. Joseph first appears in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, generally regarded as later than Mark. Luke names Joseph's father as Heli, and Matthew names his father as Jacob, which parallels the Old Testament Joseph (whose father was also named Jacob) and is in keeping with that gospel's depiction of Jesus as a second Moses. This theme is developed further in the infancy narratives, which, like the genealogies, have the function of establishing Jesus as the promised Messiah, the descendant of David, born in Bethlehem. Like the two differing genealogies the infancy narratives appear only in Matthew and Luke, and take different approaches to reconciling the requirement that the Messiah be born in Bethlehem with the tradition that Jesus came from Nazareth. In Matthew, Joseph obeys the direction of an angel to marry Mary and then to flee to Egypt to escape the massacre of the children of Bethlehem planned by Herod the Great, the tyrant who rules Judea. Once Herod has died, the angel tells him to return to Galilee instead of to Bethlehem, and so Joseph takes his wife and the child to Nazareth and settles there. Thus in Matthew, the infant Jesus, like Moses, is in peril from a cruel king, like Moses he has a (fore)father named Joseph who goes down to Egypt, like the Old Testament Joseph this Joseph has a father named Jacob, and both Josephs receive important dreams foretelling their future. In Luke, Joseph already lives in Nazareth, and Jesus is born in Bethlehem because Joseph and Mary have to travel there to be counted in a census. Luke's account makes no mention of angels and dreams, the Massacre of the Innocents, or of a visit to Egypt. The last time Joseph appears in person in any Gospel is the story of the Passover visit to the Temple in Jerusalem when Jesus is 12 years old, found only in Luke. Like the infancy narratives the story is didactic, emphasizing Jesus' awareness of his coming mission: here Jesus speaks to his parents (both of them) of "my father," meaning God, but they fail to understand.(Luke 2:41-51). None of the Gospels mentions Joseph as present at any event during Jesus' adult ministry. The synoptic Gospels, however, share a scene in which the people of Nazareth, Jesus' hometown, doubt Jesus' status as a prophet because they know his family. In Mark 6:3, they call Jesus "Mary's son" instead of naming his father. In Matthew, the townspeople call Jesus "the carpenter's son," again without naming his father, and again he has brothers named James, and Joses (i.e., Joseph), and Simon, and Judas (Matthew 13:53-58). In Luke 3:23 "And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was [the son] of Heli," and Luke makes no mention of any brothers (Luke 4:16-30). In Luke the tone is positive, whereas in Mark and Matthew it is disparaging. This incident does not appear at all in John, but in a parallel story the disbelieving Jews refer to "Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know" (John 6:41-51). Joseph is not mentioned as being present at the Wedding at Cana at the beginning of Jesus' mission, nor at the Passion at the end. If he had been present at the Crucifixion, he would under Jewish custom have been expected to take charge of Jesus' body, but this role is instead performed by Joseph of Arimathea. Nor would Jesus have entrusted his mother to John's care had her husband been alive. The original gospels never refer to Joseph's age, but in the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James, written about 150 AD, he is presented as an old man chosen by lot (i.e., by God) to watch over the Virgin. Jesus' brothers are presented as Joseph's children by an earlier marriage, and his years and righteousness explain why he has not yet had sex with his wife: "I received her by lot as my wife, and she is not yet my wife, but she has conceived by the Holy Spirit." It is believed that Joseph died sometime in Jesus’s teen years. O Blessed Joseph, you gave your last breath in the loving embrace of Jesus and Mary. When the seal of death shall close my life, come with Jesus and Mary to aid me. Obtain for me this solace for that hour—to die with their holy arms around me. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I commend my soul, living and dying, into your sacred arms. Amen.
