Men’s Basketball Adds Three for 2010-11 DENVER, Colo. - Metro State men’s basketball head coach Derrick Clark announced the addition of three recruits on Wednesday. Junior college transfers Paul Brotherson (Sydney, Australia/Central Wyoming College) and Quaran Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Ohlone College) join freshman Brandon Jefferson (Lewisville, Texas) as players signing with the Roadrunners. All three will be eligible for the 2010-11 season. Brotherson and Johnson will both have two years of eligibility remaining. Brotherson is a 6-foot-5, 195-pound forward from Australia, continuing the long line of Metro State players from Australia. At Central Wyoming College this past winter, Brotherson was named first team all-conference after averaging 16.1 points and 6.6 rebounds. He shot 38 percent from 3-point range, burying 37-of-97 attempts and shot 75 percent at the line. Brotherson also blocked 19 shots, had 22 assists and 16 steals in 29 games, leading the Rustlers to a 17-13 record. He had a single game high of 30 points against Eastern Wyoming College. “Paul is a multi-skilled forward who can play several positions,” Clark said. “He is a guy that can stretch defenses because he can really shoot the three. He has the ability to play inside and out. Paul can really offensive rebound and will compete. He will bolster our frontline.” Johnson is a 6-foot, 170-pound point guard from Philadelphia and hails from Ohlone (Calif.) Community College, the same school as current Roadrunner guard A.J. Flournoy. As a sophomore, Johnson was named honorable mention all-league after averaging six points and four assists, while shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc. He helped lead the Renegades to the Coast Conference championship this past winter. “Quaran is a true point guard that has the ability to run a team. He comes from one the top J.C. programs in California and is used to winning. He has the ability to shoot it from deep and brings all the intangibles as he is an experienced player coming in. ‘Q’ has the chance to be a great team leader.” Jefferson is a 5-foot-9, 157-pound point guard from Lewisville, Texas. Jefferson earned all-district honors three times in his career and this year was the District 6-5A Co-Player of the Year after leading Lewisville High School with averages of 18.8 points, five assists and three rebounds, while taking Lewisville to the regional quarterfinals in the state playoffs. He shot 44 percent from the outside and 76 percent at the line, while averaging 2.4 steals. Jefferson was also named Denton County Athlete of the Year and was recruited by multiple Division I schools. “Brandon is a scoring point guard with the ability to shoot the three. He was an all-state player who played in one of the toughest leagues in the state of Texas. Known as a scorer, Brandon also has an understanding of how to play and will pick our system up quickly. I expect him to compete for minutes immediately.” The three newcomers join a Metro State squad that returns four starters after graduating just one senior. Last season, the Roadrunners went 24-7 overall, including 14-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They made their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in the past 13 years, the most of any NCAA Division II school in the country during that time.
