Season 2

How has the invention of flight changed the “size” of our world? Did the Vikings set foot in North America hundreds of years before any other Europeans? Are the undead real? And how does the way we measure time change the way we live? Kyla and E.B. are ready to solve these and many more of history’s mysteries! Ep. 1 - THE MYSTERY OF IT WAS THEM The clues: A knitted sock with the word Torvik inside, a small rock, a wooden dragonhead The file label: “It Was Them” The investigation: Who were the Vikings? To find out, Kyla goes back in time and engages in combat with Torvik, a re-enactment group that brings the Viking Age back to life. E.B. meets with Viking experts at Wilfred Laurier University’s archaeology lab to see what he can dig up about this mystery and tries his hand at being a blacksmith. Finally, a dragon head leads Kyla to a modern day Viking! Mystery solved: The kids figure out that Vikings landed in North America about 500 years before other Europeans like Christopher Columbus and Jacques Cartier officially explored North America. That’s what Hermione meant by “It Was Them”.

Ep. 2 - THE MYSTERY OF WORK IT The clues: A dressmaker’s pattern from 1832, a postcard of Rosie the Riveter, a high-heeled silver boot The file label: “Work It” The investigation: Work it! Work what? E.B. heads out to the Black Creek Pioneer Village and laces up his corset to learn just how much work went into making, and wearing, clothes back in the 1800s. Kyla dons a bandana and overalls and finds out how this look became iconic, while getting to work on one of the most important planes from World War II. Finally, E.B. struts into the Ian Drummond Collection and is introduced to the world of glam rock! Mystery solved: The kids figure out that as society has changed, so has fashion. Plus, “work it” is something people in fashion say when a model is doing a good job.

Ep. 3 - THE MYSTERY OF STICKS AND STONES The clues: A stick with strange writing on it, a rubber duck with “James Naismith” on the bottom, a creepy looking mask The file label: “Sticks and Stones – Bring ‘em Together” The investigation: What do a stick, a rubber duck, and a creepy mask have in common? Following a hint on the stick, E.B. meets with his friend Kyren at the Akwesasne reserve, gets invited to a game of lacrosse, and learns of the sport’s importance for First Nations. Meanwhile, Kyla is surprised to discover the connection between the rubber duck and the origin of basketball. Finally, E.B. finds out that the creepy mask relates to Canada’s favourite sport and gets to face off against Canadian Olympic medalist Nathalie Spooner!

Mystery solved: The kids realize Hermione meant lots of sports we play today started with sticks and stones. And “bring ‘em together” meant that sports can bring people together. Go team go!

E.B., still unconvinced that the delivery receipt is a clue, heads over to the FedEx facility where he finds out the importance of flight in our everyday lives. Mystery solved: The kids discover that the invention of flight has turned the planet into a “Small World”, making us a global community.

Ep. 5 - THE MYSTERY OF TIMES CHANGE The clues: A winding key with a clockmaker’s name attached, a torn page from the railway museum with a bunch of numbers on it, a firefighter’s helmet The file label: “Times Change” The investigation: The clock’s ticking and Kyla needs to solve today’s mystery before dinner! With no time to waste, E.B. meets with a clockmaker to fix his broken watch, and learns about the multiple ways humans have measured time throughout history in the process. Kyla races to the Railway Museum, becomes a locomotive engineer on an antique train, and unlocks the mystery of time zones! Finally, the heat is on for E.B. as his clue leads him to the local firehouse where he learns that every second counts. Mystery solved: Back at the house the kids discover there’s a famous saying: “Times change and we change with them”. They deduce that what Hermione meant is that changing the way we measure time changes our way of life.

Ep. 6 - THE MYSTERY OF NOSTRA CULPA

Ep. 10 - THE MYSTERY OF THE WAY WE SEE

The clues: An old immigration document with the name Arlene Chan written on the back, an old photo of a man named Harnam Singh Sohi with a phone number written on it, a picture of the Mohawk Institute Residential School with a photo of a young boy clipped to it The file label: “Nostra Culpa” The investigation: E.B. and Kyla find out that the label “Nostra Culpa” means “our fault” in Latin. But what happened? To solve this mystery, E.B. meets with Arlene Chan, whose grandfather was affected by the Chinese Head Tax imposed by the government in the past. Kyla speaks with the granddaughter of Harnam Singh. He was on board the Komagata Maru, a ship turned away at the Vancouver port because of a racist anti-immigration law in 1914. Finally, E.B. visits the Mohawk Institute Residential School and meets Geronimo. He finds out the horrible life many First Nations kids were forced to lead in these schools. Mystery solved: The kids deduce that Hermione meant all these racist laws were the government’s fault. And since people voted for those governments, technically it was our fault, “Nostra Culpa”, too. They also discover that it is important to learn from past mistakes.

The clues: A postcard portrait of a woman with the name Malinda Prud’homme printed on the back, a strange looking old photograph under glass in a case, a DVD with the name Max Skwarna on it. The file label: “Changing The Way We See”. The investigation: TTaking and sharing photos is a breeze, but was this always the case? To find out, Kyla follows her clue and meets an artist who teaches her about the process of portraiture. E.B. meets with a Daguerreian artist and experiences what it was like to take someone’s picture in the 1880s, head clamp and all! Finally, Kyla heads out to join a workshop led by a professional photographer! Mystery solved: Taking and sharing pictures is changing the way we see the world and ourselves.

Ep. 7 - THE MYSTERY OF THE SALTY DOG The clues: An oddly shaped wood stick with an address attached to it, an old letter addressed to Captain William Johnston, a bottle with a paper curled up inside The file label: “Salty Dog” The investigation: Pirates, privateers, and… salty dogs? To find out how the clues relate to the label “Salty Dog”, Kyla sets off to meet with Cutlass Kate and her crew of pirate re-enactors, while finding out about the darker side of piracy. E.B. finds out the difference between pirates and privateers while learning how to board an enemy ship! Kyla then heads out to get to the bottom of her message in a bottle. Mystery solved: The kids find out that “salty dog” is slang for a pirate. This mystery was all about different kinds of piracy.

Ep. 8 - THE MYSTERY OF SHOW AND TELL The clues: A sign with a strange symbol on it, a map of Bon Echo Creek with a stick figure in one spot, a printed emoji symbol The file label: “Show and Tell” The investigation: From cave art to emojis, symbols have played an important part of communication throughout history, but how are they given meaning and how do we understand them? To find out, E.B. ventures out to Bon Echo Provincial Park and learns how his clue is related to a powerful First Nations spirit. Meanwhile, Kyla finds out that her street sign clue has a lot less to do with royalty and much more to do with boating. Finally, E.B. learns which emoji Canada uses the most! Mystery solved: The kids deduce that what Hermione meant is that a picture can tell a story but if you want the full story you still need words.

Ep. 9 - THE MYSTERY OF THE UNDEAD The clues: A voodoo doll, a set of vampire teeth, an invitation to a zombie walk. The file label: “The Undead Are Alive”. The investigation: Kyla and E.B. are in for a spooky time as they try to discover if zombies, vampires, and other undead creatures actually exist! Kyla teams up with a voodoo priestess to solve her doll clue and dispels the misconceptions of this religion in the process. Meanwhile, E.B. gets trapped in a room with an expert in the undead and they must use their wits to escape! Finally, Kyla gets invited to a zombie walk! Mystery solved: The undead aren’t real or alive, but they come from real legends and real cultural practices from all over the world. Kyla and E.B. cap off this mystery by making a little monster movie of their own!

Ep. 11 - THE MYSTERY OF KNOWING THE CODE The clues: A napkin with an elaborate logo printed on it, a bamboo sword with lettering on it, a jug. The file label: “Know the Code”. The investigation: With the label “Knowing the Code,” E.B. and Kyla assume this mystery is about cracking a secret code. Surely this mystery solving duo can figure this out in no time, right? Kyla’s clue leads her to a university faculty club where she plays a game of table manners. Her prize? Washing the dishes! E.B. meets up with his friend Kei and gets a crash course on the martial art of Kendo! Finally, Kyla heads over to her friend Hairmala’s home and has a traditional Ethiopian meal! This mystery isn’t as straightforward as it seems! Mystery solved: “Know the Code” wasn’t about a secret or hidden code. It was about knowing the right code of conduct in certain situations and following it!

Ep. 12 - THE MYSTERY OF DASH AND DINE The clues: An old photo of Montgomery’s Inn, a small square plastic dish, a prop fish on a stick The file label: “Dash and Dine”. The investigation: “Dash and Dine”? This label has Kyla and E.B. scratching their heads. Kyla thinks the mystery is about stealing, while E.B. thinks it’s about food. So who’s right? To find out, Kyla heads over to the Montgomery’s Inn and helps make some of Aunt Hermione’s favourite gingerbread, while finding out if she had a history of dining and dashing! E.B. finds himself at Gate Group Gourmet, and discovers how they’re the restaurant of the skies! Finally, Kyla traces her fish on a stick clue to Famous People Players and learns about the dine and dream experience! Mystery solved: Restaurants used to be places where people ate when they were too far from home to bring their own food. Now, people travel just to visit a restaurant!

Ep. 13 - THE MYSTERY OF FAIR’S FAIR The clues: A shiny beaver pendant, a coin, a pair of tap shoes with a business card from the Ethel Bruneau Tap School The file label: “Fair’s Fair”. The investigation: Aunt Hermione left Kyla and E.B. a coin marked as worth one hundred thousand! They’re rich! But why did she also leave them tap shoes and a silver beaver? To find out, Kyla looks into the beaver clue and is led to the Bank of Canada Museum. Meanwhile, E.B. heads to a coin collector’s shop hoping to cash in on his coin for a hundred thousand dollars, but is in for a surprise! Finally, Kyla laces up her tap shoes and goes to a tap dance school! Mystery solved: Anything can be used as money as long as everyone agrees on its value. Fair’s fair!
