Michigan High School Coaches Association Multi-Sport Athlete Award This letter is being sent to all members of the MIAAA through their membership email program. The Michigan High School Coaches Association has decided to start a Multi-Sport Award Program in Michigan High Schools. One of the reasons for this award is that the MHSCA and other groups are increasingly concerned about the degree of sport specialization in our high schools. The association feels strongly that multi-sports participation is in the best interests of today’s student athletes. Research has proven this in various areas. Academically, the MHSAA has reported that a student who participates in one extra-curricular activity will have a higher GPA that a student who does not participate in any extra-curricular activities. Further a student who participates in two extra-curriculars will have a higher GPA than the student who participates in only one. Further the student who participates in 3 extra-curriculars will have a higher GPA than the student who participates in two. Another study has showed that more than 50 % of the NFL Players played more than one sport in high school. So in order to help promote the total development of Michigan school athletes the MHSCA is sponsoring this award. The MHSCA and our affiliate sport associations feel that the MHSCA is the natural organization to sponsor this award as the MHSCA represents all sports and most of the member association have their own sport specific awards. Basic Criteria: Each school in state is eligible to submit one girl and one boy for award. Athlete must have competed in 3 sports for all 4 years of high school. Application must be submitted by April 15 of each year. The MHSCA will honor one boy and one girl for each class of school (A,B,C,D). Awards will be presented locally and hopefully at a state wide event. The enclosed form is a Microsoft Word Document. The person filling in the form just has to move the cursor to appropriate spot and begin typing in their response. When the form is filled out it should be printed out and sent by snail mail to address on form by the April 15 th deadline. The MHSCA hopes to be able to come up with our honorees in such a manner that schools can honor the eight award winners at their school honors assembly in spring. Also the MHSCA hopes to have some type of state wide recognition for the eight honorees either in the summer or fall.
