Miner Challenge DREAM BIG | WORK HARD | CHANGE LIVES
Do You Remember Taking the Challenge? Hello! It hasn’t been too long since you last took the challenge and participated in the Alternative Spring Break program at Missouri S&T. Because you were a part of the first few years of this program, we thought it would be important for you to know a little bit about how it has grown since you last participated! As an S&T alum you have a lot to be proud of, but did you ever think that you would help shape the way this program has grown over the years? Or how your participation has inspired other students to take up the challenge as well? On March 23rd, 2013 31 students from all areas of study will be embarking on three grand adventures across the country to give back to communities in many different ways. This year marks the largest participation we’ve ever seen before in the Miner Challenge program, and we are excited to tell you all about it! Read on to learn more about the different trips!
Who’s leadi ng:
Environmental Restoration 9 students will be traveling to Biloxi, Mississippi to work on projects that focus on Environmental Restoration of the Gulf Coast. These students are expecting to get their hands dirty and lend aid in restoring damage that has been caused by soil erosion, man made disasters like the Deep Water Horizon oil spill, and hurricanes. Biloxi is a beautiful place that has a large number of wonderful natural habitats. Students are prepared to work long days in the sun to help restore the natural habitat of the local wildlife and help to beautify the community.
Early Childhood Education 8 students will follow the lead of the Environmental Restoration team and travel to Biloxi to work with children in the early childhood education system. Biloxi has seen economic hardships like many parts of the country. Their community is trying to rebuild itself. Students are excited to help teach children, and work to support the schools in the area in any way that they can. Participants are going with the expectation that they will work hands on with young children, and help improve the physical locations.
Sort of miss it? You can still play a role... You remember the hard work you put into fundraising so that you could go on your trip? We wouldn’t have it any other way! However, students this year are facing a real challenge! Never before have we sent three trips out, because of this our costs are in excess of $20,000! Fundraising efforts are underway, however the teams will be hard pressed to reach their goals. We are asking if you
are able to contribute in any way to fundraising. By giving back to a program that gave you so much, you are ensuring that future students have an opportunity to experience something great like you did. If you are able to give $25, $50, or even $100 to this cause please consider making a donation here: https:// givingtomst.missouri.edu/ and include this
Elise Kittrell and Raheel Hassan are the Student Trip Leaders for the Environmental Restoration Trip, Angela Perkins is the Staff Leader
Sarah Jones and Cagatay Atmaca are the Student Trip Leaders for the Early Childhood Education Trip, Angela Perkins is the Staff Leader

East Coast—Hurricane Sandy After the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy, students at S&T decided that they needed to send an additional team to the East Coast to aid in the restoration efforts of the area. 14 students will be traveling to New Jersey to help clear destroyed homes, clean coast lines, lend help in shelters, and aid in whatever way they can to bring about a sense of normalcy to the lives of those still greatly affected by the hurricane. Students poured in to apply for this trip once it was publicized, and are firmly committed to doing some good on the Jersey Shore.
