• In 2008 the ‘KIDS of CADIA’ road safety project was developed as a pilot community engagement program • Partners included RSO, Newcrest Mining Ltd, and their Cadia Valley Operations (CVO) apprentice group

Mining Safer Roads • Attracted positive attention from external agencies including the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (NSW) Highly Commended award in the 2010 IPWEA Excellence in Road Safety Awards
• The project nominated for and won two Newcrest Mining Living the Values Awards (in house company awards) We Care About People and We Work Together • Newcrest Mines then nominated for and won Mineral Councils NSW Health and Safety Award for Safety and Innovation 2010.

• The successes of this project came to the notice of the Mine Safety Advisory Council (MSAC). • ‘Mining Safer Roads’ was developed to target young drivers aged 16-25 years, working within mines and related industries in rural and remote NSW • Mine apprentices

• Project base that lent itself to be fully portable and adaptable to individual areas simply by tailoring topics to suit their individual needs. • Created ‘BY the people – FOR the people’

• MSAC has been able to breech the topic of road safety with 26 mines (approx) with participating mines accepting challenges to implement road safety initiatives for their individual sites and local communities

• The base plan of this project allows for any individual or organisation with an interest in road safety to successfully embrace, adopt and tailor these strategies for implementation in their individual local communities.
