Mavericks Rewrite Record Books in Historic Season
MSU Finishes 17-1-5 and Advances Farther Than Any Team in School or Conference History Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's soccer team (17-1-5) advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, farther than any team in program or conference history, and overcame a two-goal deficit in the final five minutes of regulation against host Grand Valley State to tie the contest, 2-2, heading into overtime but evenutally fell in a seven-round shootout, 5-4. 2013 Maverick Captains: The Mavericks will feature three new captains in 2013 as juniors Tori Meinhardt and Sydney Temple along with sophomore Emily Moris have been selected to lead the team next season. Team Awards: Seniors Ashley Sykora and Brianne West were voted Co-Most Valuable Players at the team's year-end banquet, while fellow senior Emma Grumke earned the Character Through Mastery award. The award is based on three key components: outstanding teammate on and off the field, committed her best effort every day to 'get better' and viewing her mistakes as learning opportunities; while displaying a desire to help our team and her teammates in any way possible.
all five Mavericks found the net capped by senior Ashley Sykora's score that gave the Purple and Gold a 5-4 shootout victory. In the NCAA quarterfinals, the Mavericks found themselves down, 2-0, to last year's national runner-up Grand Valley State in the waning minutes of the second half. However, a free-kick goal by junior Caitlin Graboski was followed by a score from sophomore Breanna Steele less than two minutes later advancing MSU to a shootout for the second straight contest. It was a back-and-forth affair that lasted seven rounds before the host Lakers eventually earned a 5-4 victory to advance to the Final Four. GVSU fell in the semifinals to eventual runner-up UC-San Diego, 2-1, as the Tritons were downed, 2-1, by national champion West Florida. NSIC Champions: Minnesota State captured the program's first-ever regular season Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship with a 2-0 victory over rivalWinona State. The Mavericks (14-0-1 NSIC) were the first team to finish league play unbeaten since 2008.
Looking Back at the NCAA Tournament: Minnesota State garnered the second-seed in the NCAA Division II Central Region and in doing so received a first-round bye in addition to hosting the first two rounds at the Pitch at Gage Towers.
The Purple and Gold earned the top-seed in the NSIC/U.S. Bank Women's Soccer Tournament Championship and a first-round win over eighth-seeded Minnesota Duluth, 5-0, before tieing fourth-seeded Minot State in the semifinals and succumbing to the Beavers in a shootout, 3-1.
The Mavericks advanced to the Central Region title match with a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Central Oklahoma as senior Brianne West scored the game-winning goal with less than ten minutes left in regulation setting up a rematch with top-seed and MIAA-champion Central Missouri, the lone team to defeat MSU in 2012. Both teams were tied, 1-1, through 110 minutes of play which sent the match to penalty kicks where
Streaking into 2013: The Mavericks finished 10-0-2 at the Pitch at Gage Towers in 2012 and will continue a school-record 25-game home unbeaten streak dating back to 2010 when they open the 2013 campaign. Along with its home unbeaten streak, Minnesota State will carry a 21-match unbeaten streak into next season MSU tied a school-record winning streak on Oct. 28 when it dropped Winona State for its13th consecutive victory.
