Tile Talk Bologna no Baloney This year's Cersaie was great! From Arley’s vantage point, this year’s Cersaie, the international tile exposition which took place in Bologna, Italy from September 26-30, was the best in years... especially for the United States’ marketplace. For the first time, instead of products being Scott Levy skewed almost exclusively for Europe with a strong focus on Italy, there appeared to be a plethora of tile products making their debut that were created specifically for the US marketplace. Yes, there were more “wood looks.” And what we saw seemed to appear very modern with an even more beautiful replication of natural wood veining. Additionally, we were introduced to products produced solely for larger commercial projects. These were perfectly rectified to offer a total monolithic look. These collections did not just have the typical larger format porcelain tiles in sizes up to 48x 48”... but a number of modular smaller sizes as well as decorative insets including interlocking chevrons and much more. We noticed color trends that we agree will “make it big” in the States, including stark whites, grays and more “grieges.” An extensive palette of blues for both floors and walls was introduced, as well. Grey and brown colorations were also introduced. We believe your customers will love these, and look forward to showing them to you. The much talked about phenomenon of “bringing the indoors outdoors” was visible, as some progressive factories were showcasing pavers that were two centimeters thick. This process will be especially wellreceived stateside regarding multi-family high-rise construction, which continues to grow. Imagine a large floor extending from the living area to an outdoor patio with only sliding glass doors separating the two contiguous areas... even in northern states with extreme climatic change.

Another great Cersaie introduction was porcelain tile produced with a softer concrete look, offering a muted European appearance. These products provide more of a 3-D visual effect with subtle shading and a strong impression of being highly textured. Stone-look porcelain was being re-introduced with amazing replications of quartzite, slate, limestone and travertine in multi-sized formats. The look of natural marble has been re-invigorated especially with basic earthtones. Clearly, many factories have taken the process of creating flawless renditions of nature via HD Digital printing on the tile to the next level. “Fabric” tiles with a “pressed look and feel” are now more than possible due these amazing printing techniques. They are becoming very popular in Europe and we’re confident this will be a much-requested category here in the States. Remember 20 years ago when sun-baked Mexican saltillo was so en vogue? Well apparently, the “cotto” (terra cotta) look is back with a vengeance. We saw many variations of this theme with straight and even chiseled edges. We also saw many new and exciting multi-dimensional mosaics in both monochromatic and multi-chromatic styles. Ideal for both commercial and residential applications, the creative possibilities when designing with these products are limitless, and we cannot wait to present more of them to our customer base. And last, the giant format, 6mm porcelain slabs are here to stay. Some factories are making them up to 5’ x 11.’ What a perfect product for showers, as now they may be offered to customers with zero grout lines. We are introducing these products to the marketplace now, and the response and demand are very strong. We’re excited about all the new products we can offer to you. And just as excited about how Arley can help you recognize strong profits by offering them to your clientele!

considered more often for the health benefits than merely the aesthetic qualities.

Overall, what we’re seeing in interior design is a great

appreciation and fondness for surfacing materials. As the technology surrounding the performance and aesthetic of ceramic, porcelain, stone, and glass continues to grow, designers will find new and innovative ways to include the materials in their projects.

industry has been expanding the marketplace to become even stronger competitors,

particularly as LEED v4 rolls out and wellness becomes

an increased factor in interior

design. Here is a quick look at what we’re seeing surfacing doing in the industry:

Kadie Yale is Editor-in-Chief of Interiors & Sources, a national magazine with an exclusive focus on commercial interior designers who recommend and purchase products and services utilized in commercial structures.

Variety: Every year we at interiors+sources magazine walk exhibition halls, including Cersaie, Coverings, and NeoCon, and every year we come away with an

impression of the myriad of ways surfacing materials can be used in any project. Gone are the days of one-size-must-fit-all tiles. Instead, we’re seeing long planks printed in high-definition to look like wood or stone, embossed and printed in long-repeat so that it becomes nearly identical to its natural brethren, but available in nearly any colorway, perfectly fitting into any project.

Color and pattern is also making a splash. While neutrals may

always get the order, having the option to incorporate color gives designers freedom with their designs.

The same goes for tile shape. When using tried-and-true

products like ceramic, porcelain, stone, or glass, designers want

to revamp the look and feel by positioning those materials in new ways. The shape of the tile gives it a fresh appearance while still maintaining a traditional aesthetic people know and love.

Increased performance: Particularly when it comes to the

increased length and thinness of slabs, technology has allowed manufacturers to provide the market with products that can withstand wear and tear without compromising elegance.

Honesty of materials: As designers become more accustomed

to LEED v4, the transparency of materials will become much more important. LEED v4 gives points for the chemical composition of the materials, as well as how they’re manufactured. Surfacing—

particularly ceramic, porcelain, stone, and glass—has a tradition of honesty and transparency, making the job for those with concern

about where their materials came from and what they contain that much easier.

Wellness: Our concern for wellness has increased significantly

over the years. Because surfacing materials don’t trap dirt and Arley Wholesale, Inc.
