TOMMY'S FIVE KEYS Tommy Burrell is the chief researcher in the MC Sports Information Department. Each week, he will analyze the upcoming game and give his five keys to victory. 1. Air it out. The Choctaws will face a Sul Ross State defense allowing 246.2 passing yards per game. Johnothan Redd’s performance last week against HSU showed that he is ready for conference play. Redd threw for 191 yards and one touchdown after missing the previous two games due to injury. Expect to see big plays throughout this game. 2. LB play. The Choctaw’s Jake Weddle stood out on paper and film last week again. Jake recorded 13 tackles, seven were solo tackles. Expect to see #44 and company around or near the ball each play. Look for the defensive backs to join the LB core with big hits and open field tackles this week. 3. Control the trenches. The Choctaw’s Oline made its presence known last week, plowing through defenders, producing gaping holes and setting the tone for a physical rush attack. The same effort is needed this week that allowed the offense to rush for a season high 188 yard on 39 carries. 4. Special teams play. MC’s special teams has played well thus far this season. Trace Lane returned two blocked punts for touchdowns and was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week for his performance. 5. Win the turnover battle. Both teams are a minus-9 in the turnover margin department. The team with the least amount of turnovers should leave the field victorious.

WHEN MC HAS THE BALL...

WHEN SRSU HASS THE BALL

The Choctaws had their most prolific offensive output last week, scoring 49 points against Hardin-Simmons. MC had 188 rushing yards, by far their most in a single game this season. Freshman running back Darryl Garner earned his first career start and did not disappoint with 123 rushing yards on 17 carries. Junior quarterback Jonathon Redd returned from injury and was effective behind center, throwing for 191 yards and a score to go along with 23 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Freshman wide receiver Keith Williams caught his first career touchdown pass with a 63-yard reception in the second quarter from Redd. The MC offensive line had their best game of the year, only allowing two sacks and paving the way for a big rushing day. If MC can continue to control the clock and the line of scrimmage, they could be successful against the Lobos.

The Lobos have struggled on offense this season, sitting last in the conference in scoring offense (13.5 ppg) and total offense (297.5 ypg). The issues have come through the air as they have only averaged throwing for 137.2 yards per contest. Sul Ross has also hurt themselves with a turnover margin of minus-9 this season, tying for sixth with MC. Derrick Bernard is the teams leading rusher and passer this season with 63.0 yards per game on the ground and 129.5 yards per game through the air. Bernard rushed for a season-high 101 yards against Eastern New Mexico. Cordrick Mobley is the team’s leading receiver with 18 catches for 129 yards and four touchdowns. Xavier Jefferson has caught nine passes for 178 yards and a score.

The Lobos rank sixth in the ASC in points per game allowed (44.8), but they rank 3rd in rush defense, only allowing opponents 189.0 rushing yards per contest. SRSU has allowed at least 33 points in each contest this year, but held #2 Mary Hardin-Baylor to just 16 points in the first half, falling off in the second by a score of 40-18. Earl Hines leads the team with 43 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Chris Dorsey has a team-high 5.5 tackles for loss and three sacks, while Zach Roberson and Dillon Wolfe each rank second on the team with 26 tackles.

The Choctaw defense tightened up as the Hardin-Simmons game went along, only allowing seven points over the final three quarters. Sophomore linebacker Brooks Villarreal returned a fumble for a touchdown to go along with nine tackles and two tackles for loss. Junior linebacker Jake Weddle had his second straight week with double-digit tackles, posting 13 against HSU after having 19 against Webber International. Weddle leads all of the ASC with 48 tackles, averaging 12.0 per contest. Senior defensive back Dylan Klibert had his best game of the season, tallying six solo tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and one sack against the Cowboys. Reginald Bennett ranks second on the team with 25 tackles and leads the team with two interceptions.

Norman

JOSEPH Head Coach

Since becoming the 17th head coach in Mississippi College football history in 2005, Norman Joseph has built the Choctaws into a championship program, winning the American Southwest Conference in 2009 and reaching the NCAA Playoffs for the first time since 1991. Joseph was honored as the AFCA South Region Coach of the Year in the 2009 season. The two previous seasons before Joseph's arrival the Choctaws went 3-7 and 2-8 in the tough Division III league, and had only one winning season in the previous five seasons. But under Joseph's direction MC has used a high octane offense to climb to the top of the ASC standings. Coach Joseph has used a multiple offense designed to use available talent, a trait he developed as a successful Division I offensive coordinator at the University of Southern Mississippi and San Jose State University. Twice a Choctaw quarterback has led the league in passing yardage and touchdowns during his tenure, and two different running backs have led the league in rushing. The Choctaws have rewritten the offensive record books under Joseph's direction. Quarterback Adam Shaffer broke virtually all MC passing records under Joseph and was a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy in 2009, given to the most outstanding Division III player in the country. In three full seasons, Shaffer set new records for passing yardage, touchdowns and completions. As a senior, Shaffer passed for 33 touchdowns and just nine interceptions. Tailbacks Steven Knight and Desmond Mays both led the ASC in rushing. Mays set the mark in 2008 with over 1,100 yards, and Knight followed with a great season in 2009 with over 1,300 yards. In 2012, the Choctaws opened the season with a 23-17 loss in the “Backyard Brawl” to Millsaps, but bounced back with a thrilling 31-24 win over Webber International in the home opener. The injuries began to mount and the young MC team struggled to a 2-8 record. Seven Choctaws earned All-ASC honors, led by junior defensive back Keith Villafranco, who became the second straight D3Football.com First Team All-American, following in the footsteps of Jarrad Craine. The 2011 season saw the Choctaws get off to a hot start with an overtime victory over Millsaps in the "Backyard Brawl" and a 45-28 win over #8 Hardin-Simmons. The young MC team would hit the road and struggle, dropping six of their final seven games to finish 3-7. Defensive back Jarrad Craine had an outstanding senior season, earning D3Football.com First Team All-American honors after leading all of Division III with 21 pass breakups. Craine would join punter Jacob Chancellor, running back Steven Knight, and linebacker Blake Rowell as representatives in the D3Senior Classic, a game showcasing the top DIII seniors in the country. MC had more players in the game than any other school in the country. The Choctaws had 11 players earn All-ASC honors, led by four First Team selections. MC also had 19 student-athletes named to the ASC All-Academic Team. In 2010, the Choctaws opened the season 2-0 before injuries took over and MC finished 4-6 overall. The Choctaws had several highlights as Tommy Reyer set school records for single game pass attempts (64) and pass completions (39). MC landed six players on the All-ASC teams with offensive linemen Jonathan Shaw, Terrence Taylor and Chris Williams, running back Austin Divinity, defensive end Nolan Willisson, and defensive back Dustin Retherford. The 2009 season saw the Choctaws win their first ASC Championship since 1997 and advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in school history. MC averaged 37.2 points per game and set school records for points scored, touchdowns scored, first downs, pass attempts, pass completions, and touchdown passes. The Choctaws opened the playoffs with a 56-35 win over Huntingdon before falling to national semi-finalists Wesley in the round of 16. MC had three players earn D3Football.com All-American honors in tight end Renard Ellis, offensive lineman Josh Lankford, and linebacker Quartez Ashmore. In 2008, the Choctaws went 5-5 utilizing a dominating rushing attack after quarterback Adam Shaffer suffered a season

ending injury early in the year. After ranking among the nation's leaders in passing during the 2008 season, Joseph reworked his offense to use the tools at hand. What resulted was an ASC rushing title for tailback Desmond Mays who ended the season with over 1,100 yards on the ground and 13 rushing touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Tommy Reyer earned ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year honors as well. In 2007, the 8-2 team rewrote the record books behind Coach Joseph and sophomore quarterback Adam Shaffer. Shaffer ranked third in the nation with 3,500 passing yards as the team broke school records for scoring offense, total yards, first downs, passing yards, pass completions, pass attempts, touchdown passes and overall touchdowns. The Choctaws also featured two receivers who each went over 1,000 yards receiving led by Jake Allen, a First Team All-American. Allen has gone on to play for the Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns. Joseph led the Choctaws to a .500 record in the tough American Southwest Conference in 2006 despite the loss of quarterback Adam Shaffer in the first game of the season. The Choctaws did not miss a beat offensively as the team went on to rank 11th in the nation in total offense (420.3) and passing yardage (276.6). All-American wide receiver Jake Allen produced the best statistical season for an MC wide receiver finishing with a school record 1,024 yards. Quarterback Brad Madden passed for 2,025 yards, the 5th highest total in school history. In his first season in 2005, freshman quarterback Adam Shaffer set all of MC’s freshman passing records including passing yards, completions and touchdowns. Shaffer also set a school record in the season finale with seven touchdowns against Belhaven College. After just one rebuilding season, Joseph returns a team poised for a breakout season with ten returning starters on defense and seven returning starters on offense. In 2004 as the head coach of Louisiana College, Joseph quickly turned around a struggling Wildcat program. The Wildcats enjoyed their best season since 1962 (5-5) and set 38 team and 41 individual LC records. Under Joseph's tutelage the Wildcat offense ranked among the best in the country finishing seventh in passing offense, 15th in total offense and 28th in scoring offense. His team led the American Southwest Conference in total receptions, total receiving yards and all-purpose yards. Three of their five losses were by a combined eight points including two overtime losses. Prior to his year at Louisiana College, Joseph spent the 2003 season as the offensive coordinator at Midwestern State University. There he built his offense around a punishing ground attack finishing second in the Lone Star Conference in rushing and leading the league with the fewest sacks allowed. Their 5.3 yards per carry average set a new school record. During the 2001 and 2002 seasons Joseph served as the offensive coordinator at San Jose State University of the Western Athletic Conference. During his first season in 2001 his Spartan offense helped set a new Western Athletic Conference record for total offense in a single game with 849 yards. They also helped set a new NCAA

record for combined total offense in a game with 1,640 yards. The Spartans ranked 18th in the country that season in passing offense. The Spartan offense followed that season with another breakout year in which they ranked 24th in the country in passing offense and total offense, second in the WAC in individual passing efficiency and third in the WAC in team passing efficiency and scoring offense. Before coaching at San Jose State, Joseph took on the task of starting the football program at Belhaven College in 1997 where he spent three seasons as the head coach of the Blazers. In his first two seasons he was the only NAIA coach in the nation to produce a 1,000 yard rusher and 1,000 yard receiver in back to back seasons. In his second season (1999) he led the Blazers to a Top 25 national ranking for six consecutive weeks. That season his team had ten First Team All-Conference players and ten Second Team All Conference players. His teams combined to go 16-15 in three years playing against teams who had been in competition for several years. During the 1994-1996 seasons Joseph served as the offensive coordinator at the University of Southern Mississippi. In 1996 his Golden Eagle offense ranked second in the conference in scoring and led the nation in turnover margin. He also coached a quarterback to a #4 NCAA ranking in passing efficiency. He helped USM go 20-13 over his three years with most of the losses against nationally ranked SEC and ACC teams. Prior to his coaching job at USM he was the offensive coordinator at Northeast Louisiana University. His NLU offense became the first NCAA offense in history to produce a 2,000 yard passer, two 1,000 yard rushers and a 1,000 yard receiver in one year. He helped NLU to four straight winning seasons ranking #1 in the conference in scoring, passing and total offense. His offense ranked eighth in the country in scoring offense in 1992 and third in the country in 1993. NLU won conference championships in 1990 and 1992. They also received Division IAA playoff berths in 1990, 1992 and 1993. Before Northeast Louisiana University, Joseph was the passing game and recruiting coordinator at Northwestern State University in 1988 and 1989 where he won a conference championship and earned a #8 NCAA national ranking. They also led the conference in scoring, total offense and rushing offense. In 1987 he was the passing and recruiting coordinator at Louisiana Tech University. He was a position coach at Northeast Louisiana University from 1978-1986. He also served as a volunteer coach at Vanderbilt University in 1977. Joseph played college football for the Mississippi State Bulldogs and gained Churchman All-American honors in 1976. He earned his Master of Education Degree from Northeast Louisiana University in 1979 and his Bachelor of Science Degree from Mississippi State in 1977. Joseph is married to wife Jane and has three daughters, Elizabeth, Grace Anne and Sara Catherine. Elizabeth just earned her Master’s degree at the University of Texas, while Grace Anne finished a Master’s at Ole Miss, and Sara Catherine is a senior at Clinton High School.

ROBINSON-HALE STADIUM The Choctaws play their home football games in the friendly confines of Robinson-Hale Stadium located in Clinton, MS. The Facility boasts one of the largest seating capacities in all of Division III holding 8,500 people. Mississippi College is routinely ranked among the top ten teams in the country in average attendance each season. In 2011, MC ranked 11th nationally in attendance. The Choctaws ranked 4th nationally in attendance in 2009 with an average of over 5,000 fans per game after ranking 3rd nationally in 2008. The Choctaws also ranked 11th nationally averaging 3,529 in attendance during the 2002 season after ranking fifth during the 2001 season. Robinson-Hale Stadium underwent an impressive renovation prior to the 2005 season that included the installation of a new state-of-the-art synthetic playing surface as well as surrounding track facility. The synthetic surface was installed by Sprinturf, the same company who used by the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans of the National Football League. The track addition gives MC one of the nicest facilities in the state. The total renovation project totaled more than one million dollars and was made possible by the generosity of MC supporters. Robinson-Hale Stadium was opened during the 1985 season. The first game ever in the facility found the Choctaws blasting Jacksonville State 50-3. In the Dedication Game two weeks later, the Choctaws edged past Livingston University 14-7. The stadium, which is the eighth-largest stadium in NCAA Division III, honors two men who helped establish Mississippi College football tradition. Stanley L. Robinson gave 36 years of service to the College as head coach and athletic director. Edwin (Goat) Hale, a football legend, was an outstanding offensive back and was the first back in Mississippi history to be named to the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.

Millsaps 52, Mississippi College 19

Huntingdon 35, Mississippi College 7

Game #1 - September 7, 2013 Robinson-Hale Stadium - Clinton, Miss.

Game #2 - September 14, 2013 Robinson-Hale Stadium - Clinton, Miss.

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College football team opened the 2013 season with a 52-19 loss to Millsaps in the 13th and probably final “Backyard Brawl” at Robinson-Hale Stadium on Saturday night. With the news that the Choctaws had their appeal accepted and will begin their 1st-Year Candidacy Period, the rivalry is most likely finished after 52 contests, in which MC holds a 31-15-6 edge. The Choctaws (0-1) got on the board first when sophomore Hunter Estess nailed a 35-yard field goal with 4:44 to go in the first quarter. On the night, Estess was 2-for-3 on field goals. MC was able to get into the red zone in their first three possessions, but the Majors’ defense only allowed six points. After the opening score for MC, Millsaps (1-0) got a touchdown pass from Zak Thrasher to Trevor King on the next drive and never trailed again after taking the 7-3 lead. Junior quarterback Jonathon Redd went 15-of-28 for 213 yards and a touchdown. Junior Mike Johnson caught four passes for 78 yards, while junior Kris Sanders had four receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown. Senior Alex Archer caught two passes for 47 yards, including a 36-yard score. Freshman Ashford Ashiofu led the team with nine tackles and two tackles for loss. Junior Jake Weddle had eight tackles for the Choctaws. Mike Barthelemy ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries, while Thrasher threw for 171 yards and two scores. The Choctaws will be back in action next Saturday when they host Huntingdon at 6:00 p.m. at Robinson-Hale Stadium.

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College football team dropped their second straight game with a 35-7 loss to Huntingdon College on Saturday night at Robinson-Hale Stadium. Sophomore quarterback Stacey Dillard led the MC offense, going 16-for-22 for 207 yards and one touchdown. Senior Alex Archer was on the receiving end of five of those passes, hauling in 89 yards receiving. The Choctaws threw for 236 yards in the game. Junior Mike Johnson ran the ball 11 times for 49 yards, including a long of 18 yards. Senior Randal Pharr had four catches for 65 yards, while junior Jaime Harris caught three balls for 65 yards. The Choctaws got on the board in the third quarter when Dillard found sophomore Justin Sones with a three-yard pass. For Sones, it was his second career touchdown reception. Senior Doc Ward made his season debut after missing the “Backyard Brawl” and led the team with 10 tackles, including seven solo stops. Sophomore Dewayne Lewis had nine tackles and led the team with 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Freshman Reginald Bennett had seven tackles in the game and the first interception of the year for MC. After a scoreless first quarter, the Hawks (1-0) got on the board to open the second period when Garrett Fletcher punched in a two-yard score. Fletcher and the Huntingdon offense rushed for 292 yards, led by Austin Bennett with 19 carries for 128 yards and two scores. Bennett put the Hawks ahead 14-0 when he scored from three yards out in the second quarter. Fletcher capped off a 15-play, 80-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run in the final minute of the first half to grab a 21-0 advantage. The Choctaws had trouble holding onto the ball in the game with seven fumbles, four of which were turned over. The Hawks capitalized on three of those fumbles with touchdowns. Zach Brownell led the Huntingdon defense with six tackles, including 1.5 for loss and a sack. Austin Armstrong had led the way with 2.0 tackles for loss in the game.

Webber International 35, Mississippi College 7

Mississippi College 49, Hardin-Simmons 35

Game #3- September 28, 2013 Legion Field - Babson Park, Fla.

Game #4 - October 5, 2013 Robinson-Hale Stadium - Clinton, Miss.

LAKE WALES, Fla. --- The Mississippi College football team intercepted two passes and recovered one fumble, but Webber International came away with a 35-7 victory on Saturday afternoon at Legion Field. The MC defense was strong in the first half, forcing a missed field goal on Webber’s first possession and holding them to a field goal on their second drive as Andy Woythaler nailed a 45-yard shot with 3:03 remaining in the first quarter to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Junior Jake Weddle led the Choctaws with 19 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and forced fumble on the day. Last season, senior Doc Ward had 19 tackles in a game against Howard Payne. Senior Austin Gray and Ward each had 10 tackles in the game for MC. The Choctaws only allowed 289 yards of total offense to the Warriors and forced three turnovers. On their next drive, Webber went 84 yards in nine plays and capped off the drive with a Zach Day five-yard run to take a 10-0 lead with 12:03 remaining in the first half. Day rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries in the game. The MC defense would force two turnovers in the first half as sophomore Alexander Greer and freshman Reginald Bennett each had interceptions. The Choctaws could not capitalize, however, and went into the half trailing, 10-0. Freshman Jake Schwartz entered the game at quarterback in the second half after starter Stacey Dillard left with an injury. On their second drive of the third quarter, MC took advantage of a forced fumble by Weddle and went 33 yards on five plays to cut the lead to 10-7 when Schwartz found junior Jaime Harris for a 25-yard touchdown pass. After the Choctaws cut the lead to three points, the Warriors drove right back down the field, going 62 yards in seven plays and capping off the drive with a fouryard pass from Billy Pavlock to Larry Jackson-Hart. Jackson-Hart led the team with three catches for 37 yards. Freshman Willie Collard had a big game for MC in his first career start as the punter, averaging 39.7 yards on six kicks. Collard landed one inside the 20-yard line. Junior Mike Johnson led MC with 59 rushing yards on 11 carries. Schwartz threw for 135 yards and a touchdown in the game. Harris led the receiving corps with six catches for 80 yards and the score.

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College football team outscored Hardin-Simmons 35-7 over the final three quarters to to pick up a 49-35 win on Saturday afternoon at Robinson-Hale Stadium. “What a huge win for this program,” said head coach Norman Joseph. “All three facets of the game came up big today, and that’s something to build on the rest of the season. I could not be prouder of these guys and what they were able to do today.” The Choctaws (1-3) got off to a fast start with 14 points in the first 3:24 on a threeyard run from quaterback Jonathon Redd and a 16-yard fumble recovery for a score by sophomore Brooks Villarreal. Redd finished the game with 191 passing yards and a touchdown to go along with 23 rushing yards and two scores. With the Choctaws trailing 28-14 after the first quarter, they got their offense going in the second with a 63-yard touchdown pass from Redd to freshman Keith Williams. It was the Madison Central standout’s first touchdown catch of his young career. The excitement really began later in the second quarter when sophomore Trace Lane returned a blocked punt 40 yards for a touchdown. Freshman #C.J. Collins# blocked the punt to set up the score and send the game into halftime with the score, 28-28. The second half opened the same way as the first half finished with Lane returning a blocked punt for a touchdown, this time 25 yards on a block by senior Dylan Klibert. The two teams combined for three blocked punts in the contest as the Cowboys got one in the first half. The MC defense only allowed seven points after the first quarter. Junior Jake Weddle led the charge with 13 tackles, including seven solo stops. Over the past two weeks, Weddle has tallied 32 total tackles. Villarreal finished the game with nine tackles, including two tackles for loss and the fumble recovery for a score. The Choctaws would grab the lead near the end of the third quarter when Redd rushed in for his second touchdown of the day, a two-yard scamper. Freshman Darryl Garner earned the first start of his career and carried the ball 17 times for 123 yards. Sophomore Zach Favre put the game away late in the fourth with a seven-yard touchdown run with only 1:08 remaining on the clock. That capped off a seven-play, 40-yard drive that ate up almost three minutes of the clock. Favre finished the game with 56 rushing yards on nine carries and the score.
