Students research the company and the main players via the company’s website. Sample questions include: ● Who founded the company and whe? ● What are it’s mission and vision? ● How many employees?
Pre Flight Work
Students submit their own questions to the developers: ● 1 programming-specific question (How do you do x?) ● 1 career-based question (What do you do when you’re at your wits end and really can’t find a solution?)
At least 2 days before visit
Pre Flight Work
Teacher curates the questions, picks the top 10 of each category, and send them to the development shop.
At least 1 day prior to visit
Take - Off Work
Students receive a Field Trip document and teachers review with them the following information: ● The schedule/agenda for the day’s trip ● Refresh of school’s guidelines for behavior on out of school trips ● Standard guidelines for behavior in a development shop → Dev shops are often open floor plans, so its important that students recognize that their presence is likely to affect the whole office ● The non-verbal method for getting students’ attention quickly (i.e. a raised hand, or finger over lips) that will be used ● Remind the students that they should take notes or pictures to capture the experience for a reflection after the trip. Some things to look for include: ○ Who are the people and what are they doing? ○ What does the work environment look like? ○ What does the culture of the dev shop “feel like?”
Day before or morning of trip (do NOT wait to do this until on the bus).
Flight Work
Teacher leads the trip and supports professionals from dev shop to engage students by the following actions: ● Share the schedule/agenda with the dev shop and establish a “keep it moving cue” to ensure the visit stays on time ● Consistently use the agreed upon non-verbal method for getting students’ attention quickly, especially at the start of visit ● Use instructional and classroom management expertise

This can be done in a variety of ways: ● KWL → This could be used during the Pre-Flight Work ● Turn and Talk ● Comic/Cartoon → Compare “before” and “after” ● 3 Paragraph Essay ● other?
Bus ride home
