The Mona Island Rhinoceros Iguana can only be found in Mona Island. It is more common around The lighthouse and at Playa de Pájaros beach1,2. It inhabits shrub and brush rangeland and mixed forest land and the talus slopes and sinkhole depressions in Mona are its preferred habitats3. During the nesting season the southwestern coastal plain becomes nesting site for iguanas because of the loose sandy soils and areas exposed to the sun which are essential requirements for successful nesting, incubation, hatching and emergence3. It feeds mainly on “manzanillo”(Hyppomane), but also on leaves, flowers and all kinds of fruits. It may also eat animal matter including crabs, large insects (including the Plumeria caterpillar, Pseudoshyax 1 tetrio) and carrion .
