Monday Agents Accept

Hi! Thanks for bringing your child to Camp Hope! Please take time to read the news each day so your camper can get the most out of their week. We hope every child gets a chance to share the Bible story with someone at home in their own words. It would be great if you would read this story in the Bible and discuss it with your child. We are committed to growing Biblically literate children, youth and adults and you are an important part of forming faith. Bible Study: 1 Kings 17: 8-24 Our story for today was about a man named Elijah, who is a prophet of the God of Israel. He was sent to help the kings turn back to God by predicting there would be a drought. In our story, we find Elijah is out of food and water. God tells him to go to a town and ask a woman for some food and water. Elijah goes to the town and finds the woman. He asks her for some food and she reluctantly says she will give him some. She tells Elijah that she doesn’t have much and that this will be their last food until they die. Elijah explains to her that if she trusts in God, God will provide for them until the drought ends. The woman makes a meal for them and neither her flour nor oil run out. But then the woman’s son dies. Elijah pleads and prays for the boy’s life and God restores him to health.

Our theme for today was Agents accept. We talked about how the woman accepted God’s call to trust Elijah and what he was saying. She believed and saved all of their lives. Talk about a time you have had to trust someone when it wasn’t easy. What was it like for you? What made you trust them? How did it turn out? What makes trusting people difficult? Each day, we are highlighting a Field Agent, someone who has been an example of our theme for the day. Today, the Field Agent they learned about was Mr. Rogers. Ask them what they remember about him.

Tuesday Agents Choose

Bible Study: 1 Kings 18: 20-39 We left Elijah with a woman who he helped yesterday. Today, he wants to show whose god is true by challenging all the prophets of Baal. He invites them up to Mount Carmel. Then, he and they both have to sacrifice a bull. Whose ever god consumes the bull is the true god. Elijah allows the prophets of Baal to go first. They begin chanting and calling on their god, Baal. Nothing happens. They continue to dance and sing for hours to no avail. Then they start cutting themselves and shouting to their god. Still nothing. Elijah is now taunting them by saying, “Maybe your god is busy or in the bathroom”. Finally, Elijah makes his own altar out of 12 stones, places the bull on it. Then they drench the altar with jars and jars of water. He even builds a trench around the altar and fills it with water. Then Elijah calls on God. Copyright © 2017 Camp Hope

Immediately, God strikes and the offering is consumed as well as every drop of water. Our theme for today was Agents choose. The people of Israel had a choice to make: which god were they going to follow. After seeing God’s power, they began believing in God again. Talk about choices you have had to make in your life. What were some hard choices and what were some easy choices? What makes choosing easy or hard?

Memory Verse: “The Lord indeed is God; the Lord indeed is God.” 1 Kings 18: 24

Today, the Field Agent they learned about was Troy Anderson. Ask them what they remember about him. Out in the Neighborhood! Help us give hope to a student by donating school supplies. Wednesday Agents Listen

Bible Study: 1 Kings 19: 9b-18 After the battle from yesterday’s story, Queen Jezebel threatened to kill Elijah and he became scared. He ran away thinking he was the last prophet left. He ran to Mount Sinai (where God had given Moses the Ten Commandments). Elijah asked God for help. God asked why he was there and scared of Jezebel. God told Elijah to come and wait out by the mouth of the cave for God to pass by. A strong wind storm came, but God wasn’t in the wind. A fire broke out, but God was not in the fire. An earthquake happened, but God wasn’t in the earthquake. Then a sheer silence came and Elijah covered his face as God passed by. God asked Elijah why he was scared since God had been with him through everything. God shared his plan with Elijah and instructed Elijah to return. Elijah obeyed.

Our theme for today was Agents listen. Elijah had to listen for when God went by and he had to listen for God’s instructions. Is it easy for you to listen to people? Talk as a family about someone who is a great listener and what makes them such a great listener. How can each of you become a better listener? Today, the Field Agent they learned about was Katie Stagliano. Ask them what they remember about her.

Memory Verse: “And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.” 1 Kings 19: 12b

Thursday Agents persevere

Bible Study: 2 Kings 2: 1-15 Elijah’s time as a prophet for God was drawing near and he needed someone to pass on his mantle to; someone that would follow God’s plan. God chose a man named Elisha to follow in Elijah’s footsteps. In our story today, Elisha has spent some time with Elijah to learn and it was not time for Elijah to leave. Elijah asked Elisha if there was anything he wanted. Elisha asked for Elijah’s spirit and twice as much of it. He wanted to be a faithful man, like Elijah was. Elijah explained that only God could grant that and if Elisha saw Elijah go up into heaven, then God granted his request. Elijah had a couple places he still had to go to before he left. He asked Elisha to stay back, but Elisha wanted to stay with him. They crossed a river by Elijah striking the river with his cloak and it split so they could walk on dry ground. it all. Then Elijah's mantle fell down to him and Elisha knew that God was with him. Our theme for today was Agents persevere. Elijah was a great prophet who did amazing work for God. Elisha wasn’t sure about what kind of man he would be. He pushed through losing his mentor and beginning his ministry. Talk about a time when each of you had to persevere through something. What was it like? How did you feel afterwards? Today, the Field Agent they learned about was Wangari Maathai. Ask them what they remember about her.

Friday Agents Dare

Bible Study: 2 Kings 5: 1-19 Elisha has been going around helping many people and he became well-known across the country for these healings. At this point, a man called Naaman (who was commander of the army from a neighboring and larger country) contracted leprosy. This was a scary thing for him because he could lose his job, his family and his life. He didn’t know what to do, but one of his servant girls did. She suggested that Naaman go to see Elisha because he could heal people. So Naaman went to his king and asked permission to go. The king wrote a letter giving his blessing. So Naaman made the journey to see Elisha. However, Elisha did not bother to come out and see Naaman. Instead, he sent a servant to greet him and tell him what to do to be cured. He wanted Naaman to wash 7 times in the Jordan River. At this, Naaman became furious and wanted to leave, but his servant Copyright © 2017 Camp Hope

said that if Elisha had asked him to do something complicated, wouldn’t he do it? So why not just go and do this simple thing. With that, Naaman did it and he was healed. Naaman went back to see Elisha to thank him and give him gifts. Elisha would not accept the gifts because it was God who healed him. Our theme for today was Agents dare. All the people who stood up and spoke to Naaman dared to do it. They could have been killed for talking to their boss and suggesting these things, but instead, they were spared and Naaman was healed. How has

your family stood up for someone in need? How have you been daring? Today, the Field Agent they learned about was Leymah Gbowee. Ask them what they remember about her.

Thank you! Thank you for bringing things for our donations this week! Thank you for trusting us with your children and we hope they have had a wonderful week! We hope your child(ren) can join us again next week. However, if they can’t, we hope you consider having them joining us next summer. May God continue to bless your family and may you each grow to celebrate what God has done for us each and every day. Please take time to fill out a Camp Hope Evaluation Form so we can continue to improve the camp. Your ideas help us grow. You are invited to join us for worship on _________________.
