Dear Parents and Carers, I am delighted to say that we have had a fantastic start to the new academic year. Children across the school have settled into their classes very well. They are behaving well and working very hard. Some children have already completed baseline assessments to help teachers assess their English and Maths skills. I am on paternity leave this week (03/10/2016 to 07/10/2016), so if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact our very capable deputy head teacher (Mrs. Black) in my absence. As always our open door policy continues! NEW STARTERS A very warm welcome to all the new faces we have in Nursery. Mrs. Bloomfield, Miss. Currell and Mrs. Poll have informed me the children are settling in very well with the existing Nursery children. The fantastic new children are: Riveh Armstrong, Daniel Caden, Riley Caden, Isaac Connor, Harper Cook, Antonia Cutting, Theo Dickinson, Ava Doughty, Harry Fraser, Evie Harrison, Lilly-Mae Hickford, Isabelle Hodgson, Isaac Hold, Macey Horsley, Aiden Howe, Daisy Hutchinson, Lucas Jukes, Sadie Knox, Jasmeet Kullar, Jaxon Lake, Tyler Marshall, Harry Pinder, Harry Pringle, Lewis Rae, Theo Rhead, Amelia Stamper, Sophia Waites and Jessica Walker.

THANK YOU NEIL I would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to Neil Yates. Neil has been a fantastic parent governor at the school, not only has he been an asset during many long meetings, he has also played an active part in the school attending many events and educational visits such as Carlton Outdoor Education Centre. Neil has taken the difficult decision to step down allowing other parents to have the opportunity to become a parent governor. We have had two parents interested in the post of parent governor; therefore you will soon receive ballot papers with pen-portraits in order that you can vote for the candidate of your choice. I am sure either candidate will help the school move towards outstanding! SHOP FOR SCHOOLS Please remember the next time you are at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre for every £1 you spend you can earn points for the school. The more points we collect the better the prizes we can obtain! Last year you helped us raise enough points to obtain an abundance of science equipment. Thank you in advance of your support this year. The scheme runs from: Saturday 1st October 2016 to Saturday 31st December 2016.

UNIFORM REMINDER Please remember details of school uniform can be located on the following webpage: http://www.throstonschool.org.uk/school-uniform/. We have recently noticed a few children wearing white polo shirts rather than red. One addition to the webpage is to allow girls to wear skorts for PE. A skort is a pair of shorts that has the appearance of a skirt. KEY STAGE 2 HALF-TERM SPORTS CAMP I am delighted to announce that Mr. Newton will be running his sports camp again between Monday 24 th October 2016 to Friday 28th October 2016 (10.00am to 3.00pm, £6 per day). Please pick up a application form via the school foyer or download one via: http://www.throstonschool.org.uk/news-updates/ CAR PARK Please remember that the school car park is for staff only. Thank you for your understanding. NON-UNIFORM DAY On Friday 21st October 2016 we will be holding a non-uniform day for our school charities: ‘Sands’ (https://www.uk-sands.org) and ‘4Louis’ (http://www.4louis.co.uk). Both charities provide support for bereaved families who have had to deal with stillbirth or neonatal death. On this day we would like the children to come to school wearing an item of orange clothing and bring a small donation for the charities. SILENCE IS GOLDEN Well done to Year 6 pupils Daisy Adams and Poppy Boyd who raised over £50 by not talking for https://www.macmillan.org.uk/. This wasn’t easy for the girls, so well done! BIKE STARS Congratulations to all our Year 4 and Year 6 children who took part in our recent ‘Bikeability’ courses, I am delighted to say they all passed. ROC AWARD I am delighted to announce that thanks to the leadership of Mrs. Bloomfield and Miss Moody, and hard work of the children at Throston Primary School we have achieved the Unicef UK Recognition of Commitment (ROC) for our rights-respecting work. CHESS SATURDAY Well done to all the children who represented the school in our latest chess tournament on Saturday 1st October 2016. We won many games and demonstrated impeccable behaviour! FOREST SCHOOL I hope many of you have noticed the development of our Forest School. This area near the Key Stage 2 playground will allow children to learn outside the classroom. The area will feature a fire pit, seating, bog, ravine and an abundance of flora that will attract a host of creatures. Watch this space…

NEW ELECTIONS Congratulations to all of the following children who will represent the school during 2016/2017. I am sure they will do a tremendous job. All the children were voted for by our children. The Year 6 ‘Head Boy, Head Girl’ were elected after a series of speeches within the school hall. All the Year 6 speeches were of the highest quality.
