During three weeks of August 7 1959 Miss Rosalie M" Cox collected bryophytes and lichens and the foll owing notes are extracted from the Prize Essay which she submitted 9 of which a copy will be deposited at the Old Light . It must be rememb ered that 1959 was an exceptionally dry year ? it follows that further examination of the island during a wetter season is likely to yield more numerous recor ds. Polytrichum ,junip erinum Hedw, Common every where on dry open peaty soils *P - formosum Hedw . In damp quarry above Terraces 9 on banks of Quarry PooL *Fissidens viridulus (Web & Mohr) . On shady p a th 9 Mill combe , ~ , rivul a ris (Spruce) B .&. S. Almost in the water 9 Quarry Pool . Ceratodon purpureus (Hedw ., ) Brid .
