Key Words Dual-mode; Hybrid transmission; Optimum of power characteristics; Motors’ rated speed matching; parameters matching and optimization Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective By controlling the speed of motors which can also generate electricity, the engine can offer great fuel economy in a series-parallel hybrid vehicle. But the engine cannot exert the peak torque if the parameters of motors are not match well. In such a case, the engine is working at the speed that it has the ability to exert its peak torque while the motor will limit the torque of the engine due to the characteristics of the specific hybrid transmission. The power output characteristics of the vehicle can also be limited in the same situation. The key to solve this problem is to match the working points of the engine and motors including their speed and torque at the same time. Besides, parameters optimization of the vehicle can improve the performance which is the second part we will study. Methodology The method for motors matching is proposed with the help of the analysis on the characteristics of the dual-mode hybrid transmission. The motors’ maximum speed and torque are matched on the relation of the two motors’ speed and torque and those of the system. The relations of the motors’ rated speed and the working points of the engine is studied with the help of the analysis on the characteristics of the electric power split. A multi-objective optimization model is built and the parameter matching and optimization for a specific HEV including the ratios of the hybrid transmission and the parameters of the planetary gears are conducted. Results A novel method for motors matching of the dual-mode hybrid transmission with the optimum of the power output characteristics as objective is proposed to obtain the optimal matching of engine and motors. The method for the motors’ rated speed matching is put forward and a rational result of parameters matching is obtained, verifying the effectiveness of the method proposed. The motors and the engine performance are analyzed and the results show that the hybrid transmission can exert the peak torque of the engine and motors by coordinating the working points of them. Limitations of this study The optimal tractive performance of the vehicle is the only point that is concerned in this study. The problem is solved without considering the battery pack. What does the paper offer that is new in the field including in comparison to other work by the authors? The key to solve the optimal matching of engine and motors is the matching of motors’ rated speed. Motor’s rated speed is usually matched according to the experience and rarely studied. Conclusions The optimal matching of engine and motors problem is solved based on the optimum of the power output characteristics. This paper achieves important contribution to the parameters matching of the Series-parallel hybrid vehicle.
