M o u n t Formidable, W inter Ascent. O n January 3 and 4, my brother G ordy and I climbed M ount Form idable by its north ridge. Except for some washouts on the road and trail, the approach up the M iddle Cascade River differed little from sum m er. F rom an igloo on the M iddle Cascade Glacier, we reached the sum m it by climbing just right of the corniced north ridge. The summ it was obscured by clouds. W e relied on previous experience on the m ountain to descend the south side in a w hiteout and to contour through Spider Col back to our camp. L o w e l l Sk o o g
