Vocabulary

Plate Boundaries – the boundaries of tectonic plates.

Subduction – the process in which one plate is pushed down beneath another plate into the underlying mantle when plates move towards each other. Tectonic – of or relating to the structure of the earth's crust and the large-scale processes that take place within it. Transform Boundary – two plates slide in opposite directions against each other (creating an earthquake).

Bedrock – unbroken, solid rock, overlaid in most places by soil or rock fragments. Convergent Boundary – the area where tectonic plates crash together (creating raised ground, such as a mountain).

Crystals – a homogenous solid formed by a repeating, threedimensional pattern of atoms, ions, or molecules and having fixed distances between constituent parts. Divergent Boundary – a boundary where two tectonic plates are moving away from one another (to be filled in with water).

Weathering – the wearing away or change of appearance or texture of something by exposure to the atmosphere over time.
