MSI ACADEMY MISSION The mission of MSI Academy is to develop every player to his/her fullest potential, with a curriculum designed specifically for the U9-U12 age group. The environment of the MSI Academy will allow players to have fun, learn to play naturally, develop a love for the game, and become more creative and confident.

3

THE MSI ACADEMY Organizational Structure MSI Academy is organized and managed by MSI, with team-level implementation by Academy Staff Coaches who are MSI employees. MSI Academy Staff meet periodically to review the program and make adjustments to continually improve the developmental experience for all players. All decisions relating to program structure, team activities, team expenditures, etc. will be made by MSI, after consultation with Academy Staff. Logistical management of each team is supported by a Team Manager. The Team Manager shall be a parent who is able to volunteer sufficient time to maintain effective communication with all team parents and the coach, prepare player identification cards and rosters, submit applications to tournaments, etc. Team Managers shall attend annual meetings with MSI, in order to ensure full understanding of program objectives and to receive guidance as to how best to accomplish those objectives. As they advance through the program, players are exposed to different coaches and styles, much as they do from one grade to another in school. MSI Academy coaches typically work with teams for a 2-year period of time, such that a player who progresses through the program may benefit from experiencing one coach for the U09-U10 years, a second coach for the U11-U12 years, and a third coach for the U13 and years beyond. This progression-based exposure to different coaching environments is consistent with the latest development philosophy espoused by US Soccer, and is one that has proven to be successful in the most innovative soccer academies around the world. MSI is committed to continuing to work with US Soccer to provide the most up-to-date curriculum and training methodologies for the benefit of our players! Academy Coaches will be reviewed at the end of each season and the club reserves the right to change coaches of any team in order to satisfy the needs of the program. Training Philosophy: Our training philosophy works best when all players identify themselves as a part of an integrated program, the MSI Academy, rather than as individuals within a team. Once this distinctiveness takes place, player self-confidence increases with clear benefits both on and off the field. Greater competition, increased training satisfaction, and accelerated individual player development are by-products of the pool training environment.

4

Player Development: MSI understands that success is a byproduct of player development, and that without technique there are no tactics. With the MSI Academy approach, the focus on improving the individual player’s technique is emphasized by placing players in an environment where each feels empowered to make his/her own decisions. This environment cultures decision making and relieves the stress of worrying about whether the choice was good or bad. It rewards a player’s willingness to be creative in problem solving. MSI Academy players are allowed to show their abilities in an environment where they play against competition without the “fear” of losing a match. At the same time, they learn to make decisions in a match-like setting while getting more touches on the ball, thus accelerating their technical development. This allows for more creativity and an easier understanding of the game by the player who will develop an expansive and comprehensive base of soccer knowledge. MSI also recognizes that young players need to get a sense for the game and to learn to play naturally. Player Evaluation: All players are evaluated in training as one pool, not as separate teams. This pool training and evaluation style provided by the Academy allows the players to be shuffled and mixed for various alternative competitions over the course of the year. Players will be grouped in different ways by the coaches, with the players’ development always taking precedence over game outcome. League Games: Each team within the Academy will participate in league games. These games are intended to focus on player development and not outcome. The breakdown is as follows:  

Boys teams typically will play in the National Capitol Soccer League (NCSL) Girls teams typically will play in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League (WAGS)

Additional MSI Information: The MSI Academy Program is currently undergoing a unification process with the remainder of our club. The U09-U11 teams/pools for the 2015-2016 season will be recognized as the MSI Academy. Teams/pools in age groups U12 and above will continue to be referred to as the MSC Academy. From 2013 forward, all new Academy teams/pools are named MSI Academy. This is designed to create one cohesive soccer club that is recognized under one distinct name, one that has earned our community’s trust through decades of ensuring a focus on the best interests of players and their families.

GOALS 

Improving Technique - When players improve their technical ability they grow in confidence and give themselves a greater capacity to process information, which is vital in the development of young soccer players. Improving Teamwork - Another way to increase enjoyment of the game is through interaction with team mates through small group activities which enhance skillful and imaginative play. Establishing High Standards - Discipline is a key factor when learning the game of soccer. MSI expects all players to attend each training session. MSI also require that the players treat the coaching staff, opponents, and referees with the utmost respect. Preparedness – Players need to arrive early to training sessions with proper attire and gear. This includes shirts tucked in and socks pulled up, displaying proper MSI training apparel. Mandatory items include a proper size soccer ball for the player’s age group, shin guards, and a water bottle for every training session.

TRAINING OVERVIEW         

Acquirement of overall soccer skills, with an appropriate ratio for training to competition Progression of fundamental movement skills Continue to develop strength with exercises based in body-weight resistance, jumping/bounding, and balance Continue to improve speed with specific activities related to agility, quickness, and change of direction Develop endurance through training games and activities Introduce basic flexibility exercises Cultivate knowledge of warm up, cool down, stretching, hydration, nutrition, and recovery principles Present techniques to sharpen player focus Training programs are structured on an age appropriate basis, with a logical developmental progression throughout the Academy age groups

THE ADVANTAGES OF POOL TRAINING 

 

  

The pool training offered by the Academy accounts for different rates of physical and/or technical maturation and game awareness. Player development at the Academy ages is very fluid and flexible in the pool system, therefore negating a rigid, less appropriate team system. By mixing players outside their respective teams into pools, we allow for all the positive developmental aspects that come from stepping beyond their comfort zone. Isolationism amongst our youngest teams can be detrimental to young players’ development. Since players develop at different levels and varying speeds, pool training gives coaches access to develop the best in each player by training them all together. This allows each player to be challenged in different ways by his/her teammate and encourages players to learn from each other. The players across a given age group are evaluated on a regular basis by the coaching staff, which is beneficial for everyone. Pool training allows players to be exposed to two different and professionally licensed coaches at every session. The head coach creates and leads the session while the assistant supports and helps maintain a smooth transition from activity to activity. This tandem coaching approach works to further develop the players while providing multiple learning opportunities from each coach’s vast knowledge base. Pool training is competitive across all teams, giving players a chance to learn from and measure themselves against the best talent of their own age. For the best players, it is an opportunity to demonstrate skill and gain confidence and also to be a model for the players who are not yet as strong. Pool training allows us to develop Academy players that will form and become the competitive teams from U09-U12. Through U12, teams play on modified fields in 7v7 or 8v8 format. Tactics and teams are secondary to the development of individuals in 1v1 and small-group settings. Players are placed in an environment that allows them to develop an awareness of the “club culture” among different peers with whom they may compete in the future.

PARENT GUIDELINES Please refer to your MSI Club Code of Conduct which outlines and provides examples of positive parental support. As a parent of a MSI player, I agree that:              

I will remember that children participate to have fun and that the game is for youth, not for adults. I will learn the rules of the game and the policies of the league. I will refrain from coaching my child or other players during games and practices unless I am one of the official coaches of the team. I (and my guest/s) will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy and by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials, and spectators at every game, practice, or other sport related event. I (and my guest/s) will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent such as booing, taunting, refusing to shake hands, or using profane language or gestures. I will not encourage behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and/or wellbeing of the players. I will teach my children to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence. I will demand that my child treat other players, coaches, officials, and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex, or ability. I will teach my child that doing one’s best is more important than winning so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance. I will praise my child for competing fairly and trying hard. I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participants for making a mistake or losing a competition. I will emphasize skill development and the importance of practice. I will de-emphasize games and competition in the lower age groups. I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the players ahead of any personal desire I may have for my own child to win. I will respect the officials and their authority during games and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at the game field. If I wish to speak with a coach, it will be at a mutually agreed upon time and place.

I also agree that if I fail to abide by the aforementioned rules and guidelines I will be subject to disciplinary action that could include, but is not limited to, the following:     

Verbal warning by official, head coach, and/or head of league organization Written warning Parental game suspension with written documentation of incident kept on file by MSI Game forfeit through the official or coach Parental season suspension
