ILLINOIS HISTORY AT THE BIG TEN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

2008 BIG TEN INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Illini finished a disappointing 10th at the 2007 Big Ten Indoor Championships with a roster depleted by injuries and redshirts. The highlight of the meet was Gakologelwang Masheto winning the 600m title. Fifth-year head coach Wayne Angel’s top team finishes are placing third at both the 2005 and 2006 conference meets. Illinois has won a total of 21 Big Ten indoor team titles, ranking second only to Michigan’s 26 titles. The last time the Illini were conference indoor champions was in 1989.

COACH WAYNE ANGEL ON THE 2008 BIG TEN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: “I think it’s going to be a very close competition. Wisconsin is the favorite, with Illinois, Purdue, Ohio State and Michigan also contending for the top spot. Everybody will have to be on their ‘A’ game, because it could be anybody’s meet. Overall, we have balance and depth. If all of our athletes step up and do their best, scoring and making it to the finals, then we could be in contention for the title.”

Saturday, March 1 - Sunday, March 2 Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center Madison, Wis.

On Gakologelwang Masheto and the 4x400m relay: “The middle distance events are where we are looking to really maximize our points. Masheto should be the favorite in either the 400m or 600m if he does what he is capable of doing. The 400m is an area where we are very deep. We’re hoping to continue the Illinois tradition in the 4x400m relay. If the meet comes down to the last event, we have the comfort of knowing we have one of the top relays in the country.”

ILLINI TO WATCH • Gakologelwang Masheto, Middle Distance (Jr., Muan, Botswana) Masheto wasted little time making a name for himself in his first Big Ten Championships last season, winning the 600m and setting an Illinois school record in the process (1:16.28). After earning All-American status in the 400m both indoor and outdoor in 2007, Masheto will be looking to improve on his fifth place finish in the event at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships. This season, Masheto has further established himself as one of the premier middle distance runners in the nation. He made waves at the New Balance Invitational on Feb. 8, setting an NCAA record in the 500m and cruising to the event title while running the fastest time in the world this season (1:00.82). Masheto was also recently selected to the Botswana Olympic team that will compete this summer in Beijing. The junior, who was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week twice this year, will run either the 400m or the 600m as well as anchor the 4x400m relay at the conference championships. Going into Big Ten’s, he ranks second in the 400m (47.07) and first in the 600m (1:18.47).

• Nick Brown, Jumps (Sr., Maywood, Ill.) Brown is gunning for his first conference title after scoring in the triple jump at every Big Ten Championships he has competed in (three indoor and three outdoor). The senior has also scored a total of five times in the long jump at Big Ten’s. Going into this season’s championships, Brown ranks first in the long jump (24’6.25”) and third in the triple jump (50’8.75”, NCAA provisional qualifying mark). Also a two-time All-American, Brown’s best Big Ten finish was placing second in the long jump at last year’s indoor championships.

• Trent Hoerr, Distance (Sr., Morton, Ill.) Hoerr hasn’t ran many races on the track this season, but is still one to watch in both the 3,000m and 5,000m. The senior is coming off one of the best cross country seasons in Illinois history, where he earned All-America honors, captured the NCAA Midwest Regional title and set the school 8K record. Hoerr competed in the 10,000m at last year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships and is currently just a couple seconds shy of provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000m.

• Gary Miller, Middle Distance (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.) Miller has won the most individual titles (four) of any Illini in 2008. The junior will be looking to extend the school streak in

2008 University of Illinois Men’s Track and Field Notes // 1

the 600m, as an Illini has won the event at three consecutive Big Ten Championships. A four-time NJCAA All-American, Miller transfered to Illinois from Barton County Community College. He will also run in the 4x400m this weekend.

• Dominique Worsley, Sprints (Jr., Manchester, N.H.) Worsley is a title contender in both the 60m and 200m after being hampered by injuries the majority of 2007. He had a memorable 2006 season, being named Big Ten Freshman of the Year after placing second in both sprinting events at the conference championships. This season, Worsley is fully healthy and shooting for a return trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships after placing 10th in the 200m as a freshman. Currently, he ranks fourth in the Big Ten in both the 60m and 200m and is just shy of NCAA provisional qualifying times.

Zollner is tied for the second-best pole vault in the Big Ten after shattering his personal best at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 16 with a height of 16’10.75”. He has won two pole vault titles this season, and competed in the event at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The junior may also compete in the heptathlon at Big Ten’s, which he just missed scoring in last season, placing ninth.

Collegiate Invitational in New York on Feb. 8, cruising to the title against a field of 56 athletes. His time of 1:00.82 broke the collegiate record of 1:00.84 set by Michael Greene of Navy in 1987 and is the fastest time in the world so far this year. The performance also set a New Balance Collegiate Invitational meet record and Illinois school record, both of which were held by Abe Jones mark of 1:01.40 set in 2006. • Illini Dominate Carle/Health Alliance Classic: Illinois blew out the competition at the Carle/Health Alliance Classic on Jan. 26 at the UI Armory, winning the meet by 74 points and taking 10 event titles. Junior Dominique Worsley was especially dominating for the Illini, winning both the 60m and the 200m. • McHugh Throws Into Record Books: Redshirt freshman Matt McHugh moved up to third on the Illinois all-time list in the weight throw, marking a distance of 59’7” at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 15. The New Hampshire native now only ranks behind Nick Byrnes (2005) and Peter Knaus (2004), who share the Illini school weight throw record of 60’4”.
