NOT JUST A DROP IN THE OCEAN At healthy HQ, we were delighted to hear of government plans to ban microbeads – exfoliating plastic particles found in body scrubs to toothpastes – in response to marine pollution. The ban on the particles (often called polyethylene or polypropylene on labels) in cosmetics and cleaning products by 2017 has been dubbed the new ‘5p plastic bag charge’. ‘Banning them is also good from a dermatology point of view,’ says Bianca Estelle, of Bea Skin Clinic. ‘As overuse may tear skin and could cause infection.’ Products with natural exfoliants include Sukín’s Super Greens Facial Scrub* (£9.99 for 125ml) with jojoba beads and ground bamboo. MULTI-MASKING IS THAT A BIT LIKE MULTI-TASKING? Kind of. Dr Liesel Holler, of Aesthetics Lab, explains: ‘Multi-masking is a new beauty trend whereby different masks are applied to different parts of the face, depending on the concern.’ WHY DO I NEED IT? Most of us have combination skin types, according to Dr Holler – for instance, with dryness around the cheek area but an oily T-zone. Consequently, the ‘one size fits all’ approach to face masks just doesn’t cut it. HOW TO DO IT: Dr Holler advises using a purifying clay mask over the T-zone, with a moisturising mask to hydrate the cheeks. You’ll save time addressing multiple skin issues in one pampering session.
