Definitions Appliances

General Improvements

Common Area: Nonliving area shared by tenants residing in apartment, condominium or the mobile home community.

Aged Solar Reflectance: Refers to the roofing product’s 3-year solar reflectance rating.

Gallons per Cycle (gallons/cycle or gal./cycle): Measures the amount of water the dishwasher uses, on average, each time the dishwasher is operating. The less water that needs to be heated to operate a dishwasher results in less energy being used.

Aged Thermal Emittance: Refers to the roofing product’s 3-year thermal emittance rating.

Kilowatt Hours per year (kWh/year): Measures how much electricity the dishwasher uses, on average, in one year. For dishwashers, the maximum annual kWh requirement is intended to limit dishwasher standby power use. Modified Energy Factor (MEF): Measures energy consumption of the total laundry cycle (washing and drying). It indicates how many cubic feet of laundry can be washed and dried with one kWh of electricity; the higher the number, the greater the efficiency. Water Factor (WF): Represents the number of gallons of water needed for each cubic foot of laundry. The lower number indicates lower consumption and more efficient use of water.

General Improvements Insulation New Construction: A structure that is new and not physically attached or connected to an existing structure on the property. R-Value: Insulation is rated in terms of thermal resistance, called R-value, which indicates the resistance to heat flow. A greater R-value corresponds with a greater insulating effectiveness.

CA Climate Zones (CZ): Climate zones are based on energy use, temperature, weather and other factors. They are basically a geographic area that has similar climatic characteristics. Conditioned Area/Space: The living area being heated or cooled by your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Low slope: A low slope roof is a roof surface with a maximum slope of 2 inches “rise” for 12 inches “run” as defined in American Society for Testing and Materials Standard E 1918-97. Solar Reflectance: A measure of the ability of a surface material to reflect sunlight (including the visible, infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths) on a scale of 0 to 1. Steep Slope: Steep slope roofs, or sloped roofs, are roof surfaces with a slope greater than 2 inches “rise” for 12 inches “run”. Thermal Emittance: The thermal emittance of a material refers to its ability to release absorbed heat. Scientists use a number between zero and one, or zero and 100 percent, to express emittance. With the exception of metals, most construction materials have emittance above 0.80. We identify cool roofs in two primary categories, low and steep slope. Unconditioned Area: A non-living area that is not being heated or cooled by your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system such as the garage.

Definitions, continued Windows

Lighting

U-factor: A measure of the heat flow through the window assembly and SHGC is a measure of the solar energy coming through the window. Windows with a SHGC of 0.40 or less are referred to as spectrally selective low E glass. Both of these numbers can be found on the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label or on the manufacturer’s order confirmation sheet.

De-lamping: The permanent removal of existing T12 lamps/ ballasts and unused lamp holders from existing fixtures without replacing the lamps. The purpose is to reduce the number of lamps used by each fixture.

Boilers and Water Heating Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE): The ratio of annual output energy to annual input energy, which includes any non-heating-season pilot input loss and, for gas or oil fired furnaces or boilers, does not include electric energy. Energy Factor (EF): The Measure of a water heater’s efficiency. EF is based on recovery efficiency, standby losses and cycling losses. The higher the EF, the more efficient the water heater. MBtu: 1000 British Thermal Units. Thermal Efficiency (TE): Is defined as 100 times useful energy output divided by input energy.

HVAC Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE): AFUE is the percentage of fuel that is converted into usable heating energy. For example, a 90 percent AFUE furnace means, 90 percent of the fuel is used in heating your business, while 10 percent escapes as exhaust with the combustion gases. EER: The efficiency of the unit; it measures the number of cooling capacity in BTU per watt hour. The higher the EER rating, the higher the efficiency of the unit. Ton: A ton is the unit of measurement that is the cooling capacity of the system.

Electroluminescent Exit Sign: Exit Sign using materials containing phosphors that light up when voltage is applied. Fixture: Refers to new equipment being installed based on system (lamp and ballast) wattage. Fixture-Integrated Sensors: Occupancy sensors that are factory or field-installed in a lighting fixture intended to control the lamps within that fixture. High Performance T8 Lamp: High performance, T8 lamps are also known as 800 series. Typically the third generation T8 lamps outperform 1st generation 700 series T8s in both lamp lumen output and longer lamp life. NEMA Premium Ballasts: Most efficient fluorescent fixedoutput and dimmable electronics for T8 ballasts recognized by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). Photoluminescent Exit Sign: Non-electrified Exit Sign containing materials that absorb and reradiate light. Self-Contained Wall-Switch (Wall-Box) Lighting Sensors: Line voltage units that are designed to replace a standard wall switch without additional switch/relay pack. Underwriters Laboratory (UL): An independent product safety certification organization. For more information, visit www.ul.com Wall or Ceiling Mounted Sensor: This sensor is generally installed to control multiple fixtures in a zone. It typically requires a low-voltage switch and a relay pack, but may include line-voltage type sensor.

Variable-Speed Motor (VSM): A motor with more than one speed, which includes multiple speed motors or true variable speed motors. Brushless DC motors, also known as electronically commutated motors, also qualifies for a rebate.
