MV. Strannik Strannik is a Russian word meaning a wise traveller or wanderer with an enquiring mind travelling in search of knowledge and wisdom.

Unique as the destinations she will voyage to, MV. Strannik has been designed and built to meet the rigorous demands and expectations of the genuine expedition traveller. Commissioned, owned and operated by NZ biologist, historian and adventurer Rodney Russ, a veteran of over 30 years of Expedition Cruising. Combining comfort and style with the realities of expedition travel, MV. Strannik will do what other expedition vessels simply cannot do. MV. Strannik’s shallow draft (relative to other larger expedition vessels) means it will be able to go where others simply can’t, opening up new previously inaccessible areas. A maximum of 12 passengers will be accommodated in private ensuite cabins to destinations that they have only been able to dream about. It is the perfect platform for birders, botanists, researchers, writers, photographers, divers, explorers, marine mammal watchers, artists, families and friends and anybody with an enquiring mind who is looking for a genuine travel experience or research opportunity. MV. Strannik will have a very competitively priced worldwide program with a rich mixture of expeditions that individuals can join plus opportunities for group charters. We welcome all charter enquires from individuals, groups, travel agents, research agencies and the like. Please note: Passengers are not expected to assist with the sailing of the vessel, it is not a sailing vessel, but is a sail assisted motor vessel, the sails add stability and give economy. A fully experienced crew will take care of the ship and the passengers throughout the voyage.
