The Empty Tomb How do you depict an empty tomb? As far as Christian symbols go, it is rare to see a symbol or picture of an empty tomb. The empty tomb, though, is the key to the Christian life. We tend to gloss over it. The cross of course is central to our salvation but like so many Christian truths the cross and the empty tomb must go together; you really can’t focus on one without the other. As the apostle Paul said, “And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. (15) We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. (16) For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. (17) And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.” 1 Corinthians 15:14-17 - Yikes! The resurrection of Jesus the Messiah is indeed an extremely significant event for all of us. How do we “keep” it before our eyes? How do we remind ourselves of its importance and significance? We have done very well with the cross. Crosses are everywhere; on buildings, on necklaces, on chains, in pictures, in carvings, on cards and Bible covers, grave markers, and nick-knacks. Where do you see the empty tomb? I have always loved what the angles said to the women who were looking for the body of Jesus to finish the burial preparations interrupted by the Sabbath requirements, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” These are powerful words for us as we think about our loved ones who have died believing in Jesus their Savior. They are alive; just not alive here, with us. They are alive with Jesus and where He is we will be also! My brother is the artist in our family and he has fashioned a pectoral cross which I try to wear at Easter and throughout the Easter season. The cross is very cool for many reasons and it is rich in symbolism. He made it from my mother’s silver service so, right away; it has that going for it! The cross is sliver, of course, with a fish design made by the serrated edge of a knife along with loaves of bread reminding one of the miracle of the feeding of the five-thousand. The most dramatic aspect of the cross; however, is a large hole in the center of the cross. He was able to combine the cross and the empty tomb in one easily recognizable symbol. I hope I can find this cross so that I can wear it on Easter and throughout the Easter season. You and I will both be blessed by its rich symbolism and profound meaning for us as we remember the life, death and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah for us and for our salvation.
Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia! Blessed Easter, Pastor Craig

Lutheran Church of the Redeemer Got Talent Wine for the Wedding Donald L. Stephenson There was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Jesus, Mary, and the disciples were present. At a certain point, the feast ran out of wine. Mary said to Jesus: “They have no wine.” He said to her: “Woman, what has your concern to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” It might seem a rather cold, formal response, with Jesus referring to His own mother as “Woman.” Still, this is the thinking of scholars on that issue: Our Lord did use the term, yes, but He most likely spoke it with warm affection. I would add, with a gentle touch on the arm, and even a share of laughter in His all-wise eyes. The question could also be asked: was it prudent to ask the Master to intervene in such an everyday matter, when His hour (the time for Him to publicly reveal Himself and begin ministering) was not yet? Please notice two points: The manner in which Jesus had addressed Mary, did not give her pause at all. She turned to the servants at the occasion and ordered: “whatever He says to you, do it.” It is perhaps even more a wonder, that even after answering His mother as He had, the Savior proceeded to do exactly what she had requested. There must have been little or no doubt in Mary’s mind, that Christ would do precisely what she asked. Concerning the issue of His hour having not yet come: our Lord was later to say that He always did those things which were pleasing to His heavenly Father. Therefore, if it had not been quite His hour, and the Father would not have approved of His working a wonder prematurely, certainly He would not have done so. The fact that Jesus fulfilled the request, can only have meant that He knew the Father would not have objected, and the decision of whether or not to do so was in His hands. Therefore, the Master granted the request of His Mother, and enhanced the pleasure of the wedding guests. Not to mention that, if any were truly watching and considering the even unfolding before their eyes, they were being give the first adult indication of who Jesus was and the power that rested in His blessed hands. Our Lord ordered the servants of the feast, to fill the water pots standing by. They did so, to the very brim. Then, when the contents was drawn upon to taste, the master of the feast said to the bridegroom that every man at the beginning of a wedding feast sets out the good wine. When most have had their fill, then the inferior. But he had saved the best until last! That meant that, not only had the Master granted His mother’s request, He had done so to the very best of His ability. As we ponder that truth today, such should not startle or surprise our hearts. His many acts of ministering mercy always satisfied needs in the best possible manner. Even upon the cross: There was no better, more perfect gift He could possibly have given. Since He offered His sinless life, without stain or blemish of any kind, in place of yours and mine. Won’t you embrace Him in devotion now, that you may dwell with Him forever in heaven? There is absolutely nothing that would bring more pleasure to His ever-welcoming heart!
Twas the Night Before Christmas 2000 Years Ago By Carolyn Simmons Note: This was written in April 1979, outside on one of the balconies of our apartment in Izmir, Turkey. This one is published in a poetry anthology called “Winds of the Night.” Twas the night before Christmas and all through the town, The inns were all full and drinks were going round. Caesar Augustus sent out a decree For a census which meant more tax money. Mary and Joseph set out on their way To journey to Bethlehem, far, far away. Over the rocks the donkey did stumble, But Mary held tight for fear of a tumble. She had faith in Joseph and great faith in God, That she would remain safe for the journey they trod. To Bethlehem’s Gates the couple did appear, Mary knew that her time of delivery was near. “No room in the inn” was the innkeeper’s call, Joseph found shelter for them in a stall. In the middle of that dark, lonely night Jesus was born, our hope and our Light. A bright star shone over the place Jesus lay, A star so bright it turned night into day. It led shepherds and wise men to the Holy Child, Who praised Him as King, both meek and mild. The Angels and Heavens sang songs of joy, The Messiah is here, a precious baby boy. Every year we celebrate this day of mirth, A feeling of brotherhood surrounds the Earth. So join in the angels’ song of great praise, The Savior is born on the Earth for all days. Merry Christmas to all on the Earth and Above, Jesus is born, God’s gift of His love.
While I was writing this, we had a large earthquake in Izmir and it caused our Christmas tree to skitter across the hardwood floor. The Turks stood outside in the streets yelling “Allah”, standing under big windows that no longer were held in by putty, it had all come out. We lived on the 6th floor. It was an adventure, for sure. This was December 1977.
“Thrivent” Members I’m Begging You!
Rummage Sale is Just Weeks Away! The “Annual Rummage Sale” will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 12th & 13th. We will begin setting up at 9 AM on Monday, April 8th and work every day until about 3 PM. Your help will be welcome anytime you can get there. We’ll serve lunch each day to the workers. If you have passed through the garage lately you know that there is a lot of “merchandise” there...but not enough to make the $3000 we are hoping for. Please check your closets, drawers, cabinets and garages. Surely there is “stuff” there that you really never wear, or use. If you part with it you’ll have a clutter free home and the church will benefit from it! It’s a “win-win” for everyone. If you haven’t yet signed up to help, please do so soon. There is much to be done that week! Please plan to help with a least some part of it. We need people to help set it up, run it, and to clean up afterward. “Thrivent Financial” will match every three dollars that we make with another dollar. That means that $3000 would become $4000. It’s a great gift from “Thrivent” and we are very appreciative of their generosity. The money that we receive from “Thrivent” will go into the ”Organ Fund” and the money that we earn from the sale will go into the “General Fund”. Questions? Call Thelma Moyer at 259-3884.
Financial Data Total income for February was $17,147. Our expenses were $15,787 which means we had a excess of $1,360. Our YTD income is $30,631 and our expenses were $36,683 which means we are currently behind in the amount of $6,052. His Place Ministries was the recipient of $230 for our February thank offering. We added $305 to the Improvement Fund.
Please pay attention to the information you receive from “Thrivent” about “Choice Dollars” that are available to you for distribution. It’s no longer “automatic” that the church will receive them. It’s very easy to direct those funds allotted to you. Just call 1-800-Thrivent (847-4836). When they answer, say “Choice Dollars”. From there you will be prompted the rest of the way and they will be able to tell you how much money you have to distribute, and get it done for you. If you haven’t heard from them, call anyway and see if you are on the list and have dollars to assign. You will be able to do it four times each year. These “Choice Dollars” added over $11,000 to our income last year. That’s how important they are!!! Also, you should all have received a ballot to use for voting on the proposed change as to whether or not they should be able to sell products to Christians other than Lutherans. Please don’t ignore these mailings. They are both very important. If I can answer any questions for you, just give me a call at 259-3884. Thelma Moyer, Thrivent Advocate for Redeemer
Organ Fund is Off to a Great Start!!! Have you donated a key yet? As we mentioned last month, we have established a fund to raise money for a new organ so that we will be prepared to replace the current one, when it goes bad. We have had one very generous donation of $3000. We also have a donor who has offered to match other donations up to a total of $1000. That is a real incentive for the rest of us to get actively involved in this fund. The matching offer only lasts through the second Sunday in April, so it’s important to act now!!! Please become a part of this important effort! There are a total of 183 keys. If you would like to buy a key, each key is worth $273.22. So an octave would be valued at $2,185.76. You can make your donations in church or on-line.
Newscaster Deadline for May will be April 15th!
Temple Talk for April 2013 – Space Coast Center for Women with Children The Social Ministries Committee has selected the Space Coast Center for Women with Children as the recipient of the Thank Offering for April. Their mission is to provide safe housing, spiritual guidance and supportive services for mothers and their children who are homeless but are striving to become self sufficient. The Space Coast Center is located at the former Resurrection Ranch. It took two years with donations and volunteers to improve the buildings and get them ready to open. Women and children account for more than half of the homeless population in Brevard County. The Space Coast Center for Women with Children can provide these women and children a healthy and safe environment in which to improve their lives. The services available include two year free living spaces, transportation to work, school, doctors appointments and shopping. Vocational and life skill training is also available. It includes parenting and social skills, anger management and financial skills. Mental health counseling for individuals and groups is available be degreed mental health counselors. Families who complete the program will be able to secure higher paying jobs and acquire safe housing. They will have achieved personally defined goals and raised baseline measurements regarding their mental, physical life skills while living in a faith based and loving community. Please consider this organization for the Thank Offering as well as volunteering in their office or thrift store.
Web Site Update! Something exciting is happening with our web site! You and anyone you know may listen to sermons on our web site from our Sunday morning worship. If there are outlines or handouts with the sermon, they also will be available for print out or reading. We hope this is a benefit to you and our winter guests especially; also for those who are sick or traveling. You may also refer someone to the web site for the purpose of listening to a particular sermon as a help in your witnessing program. This is a particularly nice feature for our church and is made available through our web hosting company but also requires the assistance of Steve Weiss to help record the service/sermon and Swede to convert the file to an MP3 format for placing on the web.
Dearest Friends at Redeemer & Pastors, Thank you for your friendship, prayers and thoughts for the past 13 years. I appreciate them more than I can ever say. I hope I will continue t have them and I will keep you in mine. Stay well, Be happy & Keep Christ in your Heart! Pat Hibbard

Clean-up List
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the families of:
Since we were few in number for the “Spring Clean -up”, there are still a number of things that need attention. On the bulletin board in the narthex I have posted a list of the jobs that we didn’t get to. If you have any interest in doing those chores, at a time when it’s convenient for you, it would be really appreciated.
