PENSIONERS (Fourth and Final Installment - Continued from Vol. 16, No.1 & 2, Feb & May 1995) CONTRIBUTED
BY: Robert W. BENTLEY,
Sf. 403 Hill Avenue, Muscle Shoals, AL 35661
The 1907 Census of Confederate Soldiers Living in Colbert County, Alabama, has been published twice, first in the Alabama Genealogical Society Magitziiie, Vol. 4, 1970, and again in Valley Leaves, Vol. 17 and 18, 1982 and 1983. The following records are different in that they contain the names of both the widows and the ex-soldiers who received pensions. Some of the names are the same, of course, but the information is entirely different. The remarks are particularly valuable. The list is in a ledger in the Probate Record Room, Colbert County Court House, Tuscumbia. The title of the ledger is "List of Pensioners in Colbert County, Ala."; the list is in A-B-C order but not alphabetical within each alpha listing. The ledger is not dated. Column headings are: Name, Class No., Warrant No., Date of Application, Date Oranted, Date Refused, Date Ceased Drawing, Reason, and Remarks. Many of the columns are not filled in and there are many hand-written notes that rarely are in the Remarks column. Pensions were paid every three months. In 1914 the rate (for three months) was $25 for Class 1, $20 for Class 2, and $16 for Class 3. By 1934 the rates (for three months) were $150 for Class A, $75 for Class 1, $45 for Class 2, and $30 for Class 3. In the following list, only those columns with an entry for the individual are reported.
