The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, at National University of Singapore (NUS), hosted 61 special visitors on 20 September 2016. Why special? Because they were from Octave @ Bukit Batok and Octave @ Cantonment. Every week, our volunteers interact with clients at these 2 centres above, together with 5 other centres that are managed by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). MDOP is a long-running RSVP program. Our Kong Chian Natural History Museum volunteers befriend clients at these centres and help them transit to normal everyday life after being discharged from IMH. Visits like these are part of the therapeutic activities that we offer.

The enthusiastic visitors including our volunteers (there were 26) were enthralled by the young Museum Guides who did a fine job of telling their visitors about the priceless exhibits on the ground floor as well as the Heritage Gallery on the floor above. Who would not be thrilled by the sight of huge dinosaurs and the unique opportunity of touching an ancient petrified dinosaur bone? It is definitely something to tell friends about.

For older visitors, nostalgic memories were rekindled. It reminded them of visits to the old Raffles Museum where they could see colourful butterflies, even the odd Orang Utan and of course, the whale. No outing would be complete without a delicious meal. And this one was no different. The visitors all enjoyed a bento box lunch before saying good bye to the Museum. Many of the visitors would heartily agree with the person who said for all to hear, “I’ll definitely come back again many times. It is so interesting.” The many happy faces all around say the same thing.
