NCAA Tournaments NCAA Appearances The Utah women have made 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including seven in the last 10 years. The Utes advanced to the second round for the first time in 1997 and made history in 2001 with a Sweet 16 appearance. Their best showing was in 2006, going to the Elite Eight. Utah is 9-15 overall in the tournament.
Utah hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament in 2001, moving into the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history before falling to eventual national champion Notre Dame, 69-54.
Kim Smith (4) is all smiles after the Utes reached the second round with a 74-65 win over DePaul in 2003. Smith had a career-high 35 points in the win.
Utah celebrates its 2006 Sweet 16 win over Boston College, 5754. The Utes would fall to eventual national champion Maryland in the Elite Eight. Utah beat Villanova 60-30 in the first round in 2009. The 30 points is the third-lowest points a team has ever been held to in an NCAA Tournament game. Katie King (right) tied her career-high with 18 points in the game.

History of the Utes
Utah head coach Elaine Elliott earned her 500th win with a 73-57 victory over Colorado State on Jan. 12, 2007. Her 559 victories going into the 2009-10 season rank tied for 16th among all active Division I coaches. Kim Smith (above and at right) is the only Utah player to have her number retired. She holds the Mountain West Conference records for points and rebounds. Smith earned third-team AP AllAmerica honors her senior season after leading Utah to the Elite Eight.
Deb Asper was a three-time All-American for the Utes from 1982-84. Asper, Kim Smith and Julie Kromenhoek are among the Utes to earn multiple All-America honors.

The 1997-98 team climbed as high as No. 9 in the USA Today/ESPN poll. The senior class of Laura Ross Allen, Amy Alcorn, Alli Bills, Julie Krommenhoek and Angie Thill went to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

Utes On National Teams Kim Smith
Kim Smith is one of the most decorated players in Canadian National Team history. She has been with the team for seven years (2001-06, 2009) and most recently helped Canada qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championships with a third-place finish at the 2009 FIBA Americas Tournament. It will be backto-back World Championships for Smith, who also played in the 2006 World Championships. She scored 78 points in eight games with one double-double and two 18-point performances in 2006, with the Canadians placing 10th. Other highlights include a third-place finish in the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament.
Shona Thorburn Shona Thorburn was a member of the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team from 2003-04. She competed at the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament in 2003, where Canada finished third. Thorburn was also in the 2003 Pan American Games.
Taryn Wicijowski
Jess Perry Jess Perry helped lead Canada to a ninthplace finish at the 2005 FIBA U19 World Championships. She was also with the Junior National Team in the 2004 L’International de Basketball de Quebec and an exhibition series in France.

Taryn Wicijowski served as a team captain for Canada’s fourth-place run at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championships, held in Bankok, Thailand. She averaged 8.3 points and 8.1 rebounds during the tournament. Wicijowski was also on the 2008 team that placed second at the FIBA Americas U18 Championships

Leilani Mitchell was traded to the New York Liberty shortly after being drafted in 2008. She has been a regular in the Liberty’s rotation the past two seasons.
Shona Thorburn was the highest draft pick in MWC history. She played for the Lynx in 2006 with a brief stint with the Seattle Storm in 2007. Kim Smith played in 55 games over three years (2006-08) with the Sacramento Monarchs.
Morgan Warburton participated in preseason camp for the Monarchs in 2009 before being waived in early June.

Travelin’ Utes
