why study a mathematics classroom? ² striving
toward equity in mathematics education:
²too many students do not like and do not feel competent in mathematics ²by the time they reach high school, students enter mathematics classes with strong ideas about who they and their peers are as mathematics learners (Horn, 2012) ²a lack of success in learning mathematics is still too frequent and too predictable, particularly for students of color and for girls (Cohen & Lotan, 1997; R. Gutiérrez, 2007; 2013) ²success in mathematics supports success in other academic areas (National Research Council, 2001) ²classrooms that are student-centered and framed on discourse practices and group work have proven to effectively support historically marginalized students’ success in high-level mathematics content (Dunleavy, 2015; Boaler & Staples, 2008; Cohen & Lotan, 1997)
