NBISD partners with City of New Braunfels to teach sixth-graders how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle NEW BRAUNFELS, TX – For the second year in a row, New Braunfels ISD has partnered with the City of New Braunfels Solid Waste and Recycling Division to host Reduce, Reuse and Recycle presentations for all of the district’s sixth-grade students. The presentations took place on Sept. 21-22 at New Braunfels Middle School and Sept. 23-24 at Oak Run Middle School for more than 650 sixth-grade students in NBISD. Day One of the presentations included lessons to educate students about waste generation and recycling that incorporated several TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) standards. Day Two was comprised of activities to engage teamwork and challenge the students with games such as Tin Can Bowling, Recycling Relays and a Soda Can Tower Challenge. “For most people, garbage and recycling is a daily, mundane task,” said Catelyn Scholwinski, recycling coordinate for the City of New Braunfels. “We are allowing every sixth-grader in NBISD to become a more informed citizen of our community, while boosting their ability to think creatively about reuse and utilize problem-solving skills.” The information they learned on the first day was key to the success of how they did on the second day. The object of the Recycling Relays was to see which teams could sort through discarded items the fastest and determine if they were recyclable or non-recyclable. The first team to fill their bin was the winner. The other games they played also required knowledge from the lessons that were taught on the first day in order to win. “Our ultimate goal is to provide fun, engaging activities that inspire the students to go back into the community and apply what they have learned in science,” said Robin Wright, science curriculum specialist for NBISD. “Through this program, we have the opportunity to help create life-long habits that will certainly have a positive impact on our city’s recycling program.” About New Braunfels Independent School District New Braunfels Independent School District (NBISD) is located in New Braunfels, Texas, and serves more than 8,400 students that reside in Comal and Guadalupe Counties.
