This Week in UNO Baseball - The Privateers will open up conference play on the road at Sam Houston
State this weekend, which will account for three of the four road games New Orleans has this month.
The Competition - Sacred Heart opened their season against another Southland opponent
in Northwestern State. The Pioneers lost all three games and scored two runs in their opening series. The last game of the set went 16 innings and ended on an RBI single with the bases loaded.
Last Outing - The Privateers avoided a sweep and an 0-5 week by defeating Middle
Tennessee 8-2 on Sunday. New Orleans scored five runs in the first inning to set the tone. Alex Smith scattered 10 hits over six innings and allowed just one run (unearned).
Next Up - The Privateers will play the Southland pre-season favorite to open up con-
ference play in Sam Houston State. The series starts Friday with a first pitch of 6:30 p.m.
UNO as a Team - Out of 49 games in 2014, half of those contests were decided by one or
two runs. The Privateers finished 5-19 in games decided by two runs or less and lost 10 one-run games. - The Privateers swept their first weekend against D-I competition since sweeping a series against Grambling in April 2009 by winning all three games of the MLB Urban Youth Invitational. - New Orleans busted out of an offensive slump on Sunday, scoring eight runs. In four previous games, the Privateers had scored just three runs including getting blanked in back-to-back games against Tulane. - Ron Maestri is in his second season of his second stint in the dugout with the Privateers. Maestri won 518 games in 14 seasons from 1972-85 before returning in 2014.
UNO Individually - Samuel Capielano became the first Privateer athlete to be named to a pre-
season All-Conference First Team since 2009 (Lindsey Loyd- Volleyball) when he was tabbed First Team All-Southland. - Chaz Boyer committed his first error of his collegiate career in Saturday’s loss to Middle Tennessee. Boyer had previously gone 235 chances without committing an error. - Ryan Calloway stole two bases for the Privateers on the weekend. Calloway swiped 44 bases in total last year at Alabama Southern CC. - Shawn Semple struck out 10 batters in 6.2 innings against Alcorn State. It was the first time a Privateer fanned at least 10 opposing batters in an outing since May 2008 (Bryan Cryer). - Seth Laigast worked 4.2 shutout innings over three relief appearances last week. Laigast had two strikeouts in his first four appearances (5.2 innings). - Alex Smith has gotten the starting call in three games over an eight-day span. Smith started contests against Southern (2/21), Tulane (2/25), and Middle Tennessee (3/1).

Head Coach - #21 Ron Maestri Once referred to as the “sole architect of Privateer Baseball”Ron Maestri is in his second season back in the Privateer dugout for a second stint managing the program he built, following an eight-plus year run working with the New Orleans Zephyrs as the Triple-A club’s Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. Between 1972 and 1985, Maestri’s teams compiled a record of 518-247-1, his .667 winning percentage the best in school history. During that time, Maestri’s teams never had a losing season, and reached the NCAA tournament in 10 of his 14 years at the helm. In 1973, only his second on the Lakefront, Maestri’s squad reached the NCAA Division II Regionals, before finishing a game short of a National Championship in 1974. His best spell in charge came between 1977 and 1982, when the Privateers won two Sun Belt Tournament Championships and qualified for the postseason six straight times. After leaving the dugout following the 1985 season, Ron Maestri would continue on as Athletic Director until 2000, and oversee the a period of remarkable success for Privateer Basketball, with the hiring of coaches including Benny Dees, Tim Floyd, Joey Favaloro and Tic Price.
