New State Standards?

What Should We Do First?

Cory Epler, Ph.D. Chief Academic Officer

Draw a flowchart that reflects the major activities/milestones that occur in your district/school when new state standards are approved.

Nebraska Revised Statute: 79-760.01 • Requires the State Board of Education to: • Adopt measurable academic content standards for at least the grade levels required for statewide assessment. • Cover the subject areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. • Develop a plan to review and update standards for each subject area every seven years.

Nebraska Revised Statute: 79-760.01 • For reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies, the statute requires districts to: • Adopt state-approved content standards

OR • Adopt content standards deemed equal to or more rigorous than the state-approved standards

Moving beyond the minimums…

Content Area Standards • NDE has developed content area standards beyond those required by law. • Fine Arts, Physical Education, World Languages, Health Education, Career and Technical Education

• Districts are also encouraged to adopt these stateapproved content standards

Questions to Consider… • Who is responsible for ensuring that state approved content area standards are implemented with fidelity? • What is the role of NDE? ESUs? Districts? Schools? Teachers?

• What is the benefit of successful implementation of state approved content area standards? • How does that support college and career readiness?

Content Area Standards Implementation Taskforce • Goals: 1. Develop a content area standards implementation framework 2. Design professional development content and a delivery model 3. Create digital resources that are accessible to educators throughout Nebraska

Implementation Science • “Implementation is defined as a specified set of activities designed to put into practice an activity or program of known dimensions.” (Fixsen et al., 2005, p.5). • Implementation processes are purposeful and described in sufficient detail so observers can detect presents and strength of activities related to implementation.

Content Area Standards Implementation Framework Roles

• State (NDE) • ESUs • District • School • Teacher Who is responsible for what?

Content Area Standards Implementation Framework Stages of Implementation

• Exploration • Initial Implementation • Scale-Up • Deep Implementation • Sustainability What happens within each stage within your schools?

Content Area Standards Implementation Framework Categories

• Alignment and Transition • Assessment and Accountability • Professional Learning • Instructional Resources • Communication What type of activities would be included within each category?

Content Area Standards Implementation Framework • Take a quick look at the draft framework • What is your reaction? What questions do you have? • How might you see this resource being used?

Moving Forward • Content Specific Implementation Frameworks • What does it look like for science? Ag?

• Digital resources that support implementation • Professional learning resources to support implementation

Thank you!
