BUILDING HISTORY: 401 Logan Avenue was one of the most notable factories in the district during the First World War. James William Woods was a businessman from Ottawa of Anglo-Irish descent. In 1895, Woods was making and supplying clothing, camping outfits, tools and other products for lumber camps. In the early 1900s, it supplied the British Government with canvas tents for the troops serving in the Boer War. The company is most recognizable for supplying equipment to the British and Canadian armies during the First World War. The Woods tent factory became the largest of its kind in world at this time. The Smart Bag Co. Ltd., Smart Woods Ltd., and Woods Mfg. Co. Ltd. (1908-) building was designed in1907 by architect James Layrock Havill.
The building has transitioned into a creative hub that includes: The Media Concierge, East End Project, Artists' Play, Cargo Cabbie and 3D Phacktory.
